We strive to provide the uttermost care and curated care plans. WORDS FROM DR. WOLFE Hello! If you’re here, my story will sound familiar. As a practitioner I feel very vulnerable telling it, but I want you to know you are not alone! I experienced so much illness in my life, suffered from so many different kinds of serious conditions, I became hopeless. I lost a sense of “the real me” and wondered if I’d ever find myself and my health again. My frustration with incorrect diagnoses, immune system weakening medicines, and constantly falling into cycles of illness, lead me to seek out my own answers and a new approach to my health. I like to say Functional Medicine found me and changed my life forever. I’ve spent the last 17 years of my life engrossed in this; studying published medical journals, attending symposiums, working on diplomates and seeking out the hidden solutions to many health concerns. I work to offer much more than blanket alternative care. I want answers and I want to be able to help you regain control of your health! I’m in the best health of my life thanks to Functional Medicine, and I’ve thankfully been able to put an end to the cycles of illness I suffered the first half of my life. I want this for you too! I believe life brought me all these health challenges not only to make me a stronger person, but also a better doctor and understand first-hand what you’re going through. It is my mission to help you experience vibrant health again whether you’re suffering from a chronic illness or simply want to optimize your current level of wellness. I will fight for your health with the same persistence and dedication I fought for my own. I’m grateful for the privilege of supporting you in your journey back to “the real you”. Thank you for reading my story. I’m ready to hear yours. Warmly, Dr. Wolfe. ## Dr. Ginger Wolfe, DC, DABCI ### Doctor Wolfe has over 25 years of experience, helping patients with chronic health conditions such as: - MdDS (Mal de Debarquement Syndrome) - Hormone Imbalance - Thyroid Imbalance - Autoimmune Conditions - Cardiovascular Health - Mycotoxin/Mold Illness - GI Conditions - Inflammation - Lyme disease - …and much more! This process can affect nearly every organ system, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, rashes, digestive issues, brain fog, muscle weakness, numbness, headaches, and widespread inflammation. Many patients spend years searching for answers while their symptoms are dismissed or treated in isolation, without anyone addressing the deeper factors driving their immune dysregulation. # Autoimmune Conditions: At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we approach autoimmune disease from a root-cause, systems-based perspective. Instead of focusing solely on the diagnosis — Hashimoto’s, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, celiac disease, psoriasis, Sjögren’s, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, or others — we look at why the immune system has shifted into attack mode in the first place. Through advanced functional testing, we evaluate immune activation, inflammation markers, antibody levels, gut integrity, environmental toxin burden, viral reactivation, food sensitivities, adrenal function, and nutrient deficiencies. Because nearly 80% of the immune system is housed in the gut, we also assess microbiome balance, intestinal permeability, and digestive inflammation — critical but often overlooked triggers for autoimmune progression. Plans are highly individualized and may include targeted nutrition, gut repair, detoxification pathways support, immune-modulating botanicals, stress and sleep optimization, mitochondrial support, and strategies to calm chronic inflammation. When appropriate, we collaborate with your medical team to integrate medication needs while strengthening the body’s natural regulatory pathways. Our goal is not just to reduce symptoms, t’s to help stabilize and calm the immune system so your body can heal and function more effectively. With the right support, many patients experience improved energy, fewer flares, better digestion, reduced pain, and a renewed sense of control over their health. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we help you understand the “why” behind your condition and provide a clear path toward stability and resilience. --- title: "Autoimmune Gi Conditions" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/autoimmune-gi-conditions" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/autoimmune-gi-conditions" lastmod: "2026-07-31T00:03:49.330Z" --- # AUTOIMMUNE / GI CONDITIONS Autoimmune and gastrointestinal (GI) conditions are becoming increasingly common, and it’s no coincidence that these two systems are deeply connected. Around 80% of the immune system lives in the gut, meaning that when your digestive health is compromised, your immune system often follows. Every day, we are exposed to environmental toxins, processed foods, stress, and chronic infections that challenge the body’s natural defenses. Over time, these stressors can confuse the immune system, leading it to mistakenly attack healthy tissues. This process lies at the root of many autoimmune conditions — including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis. When the gut barrier becomes “leaky” or inflamed, it can set off a cascade of symptoms such as bloating, constipation, diarrhea, food sensitivities, and nutrient malabsorption. Left unresolved, this chronic inflammation can evolve into more complex autoimmune disease. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we take a root-cause approach to restoring balance in both the immune and digestive systems. Through advanced functional testing, we evaluate gut integrity, microbiome diversity, inflammation markers, and immune regulation. From there, we build a personalized plan that may include targeted nutrition, detoxification support, lifestyle adjustments, and high-quality supplementation to help the body heal from within. Our goal is to help patients understand the “why” behind their symptoms — and create a clear path toward true recovery. We work with patients via telehealth or in-person, providing individualized care that supports lasting wellness. If you’ve been struggling with autoimmune or digestive symptoms and feel like you’ve hit a wall with traditional approaches, we invite you to explore a new way forward with Wolfe Functional Medicine. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we offer innovative PCR technology to evaluate your GI tract for pathogens, parasites, fungal infection, immune function, inflammation and auto-immune related infections. --- title: "Candida" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/candida" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/candida" lastmod: "2026-07-31T00:03:48.127Z" --- # Candida ## Understanding Candida Candida is a naturally occurring yeast that lives in the gut, mouth, and mucosal tissues, but when it becomes overgrown, it can quietly disrupt digestion, immunity, hormones, mood, and energy. Stress, antibiotics, mold exposure, blood sugar imbalance, and certain medications can all trigger Candida to shift from a harmless resident to an aggressive, toxin-producing organism. Symptoms often seem unrelated - cravings, bloating, rashes, brain fog, fatigue, or recurrent infections, which is why Candida is frequently overlooked or mistaken for something else. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we help uncover whether Candida is the hidden driver behind your symptoms and guide you toward lasting balance. ## Candida: Candida Overgrowth at Wolfe Functional Medicine Candida is a normal part of the microbiome, but under the right conditions it can multiply, release toxic byproducts, and overwhelm the body’s detoxification and immune systems. This imbalance often develops after antibiotics, oral contraceptives, frequent steroid use, high stress, mold exposure, excessive sugar intake, or chronic inflammation. When Candida shifts from its yeast form into its more invasive fungal state, it can irritate the gut lining, disrupt nutrient absorption, and trigger systemic symptoms far beyond digestion. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we take a comprehensive approach to identifying and eliminating Candida overgrowth. Using functional testing such as comprehensive stool analysis, Organic Acid Testing, and inflammatory markers, we assess fungal burden, gut microbiome balance, intestinal permeability, and the presence of coexisting infections or toxins — particularly mold and mycotoxins, which often amplify Candida symptoms. Because Candida rarely exists in isolation, we evaluate the overall terrain that allowed it to overgrow: weakened immunity, poor detox capacity, nutrient deficiencies, dysbiosis, stress-driven cortisol dysfunction, and impaired gut motility. Addressing these root contributors is essential for preventing recurrence. Plans are individualized and may include targeted antifungal botanicals, probiotics and prebiotics, binding agents for toxin clearance, gut-lining repair nutrients, blood sugar stabilization, and dietary strategies that calm inflammation without extreme restriction. We also focus on restoring healthy microbial diversity and rebuilding the gut-immune connection for long-term resilience. Many patients experience improvements in energy, digestion, mental clarity, skin health, and mood once the Candida burden is corrected and the gut environment is restored. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we help you break the cycle of recurring Candida by finding the root cause, repairing the gut, and supporting the systems that keep your microbiome in balance. We understand how discouraging recurring Candida symptoms can be — especially when they interfere with your energy, comfort, and confidence in your own body. Our approach goes beyond quick fixes by addressing why the imbalance started and what your system needs to restore long-term stability. Through personalized care and targeted support, we help you rebuild a healthy microbiome and feel clear, balanced, and resilient again. --- title: "Comprehensive Bloodwork" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/comprehensive-bloodwork" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/comprehensive-bloodwork" lastmod: "2026-07-31T00:03:49.676Z" --- # COMPREHENSIVE BLOODWORK Go Beyond Routine Labs with a Functional Medicine Approach At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we know that basic labs like a CBC, CMP, and standard lipid panel are just the tip of the iceberg. While helpful, these conventional tests often miss the deeper imbalances driving symptoms, chronic conditions, or unexplained health issues. That’s why we offer a comprehensive functional medicine blood panel —designed for patients who want more than a routine checkup. Our testing is built to uncover root causes and provide a full-body health assessment, not just a snapshot. This advanced panel evaluates: Autoimmune markers to detect early signs of immune dysregulation Lipid particle fractionation for a more accurate assessment of cardiovascular risk Systemic inflammation markers like hsCRP and fibrinogen Advanced thyroid panels , including free T3, free T4, reverse T3, and antibodies Vitamin and nutrient deficiencies , such as B12, vitamin D, and iron Quantitative antibody levels to assess immune strength and infection reactivity Candida and yeast antibodies to evaluate gut-related and systemic fungal overgrowth Anemia profiles that go far beyond hemoglobin levels If you’re ready to stop guessing and start getting answers, our functional lab work offers a deeper understanding of your biology—so we can build a truly personalized wellness plan. --- title: "Contact" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/contact" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/contact" lastmod: "2026-07-31T00:03:48.752Z" --- # CONTACT ### Wolfe Functional Medicine 921 Main St. Louisville, CO 80027 (303) 447-2225 (303) 447-2226 #### Business Hours: Monday: 10:00am – 4:00pm Tuesday: 1:00pm – 5:00pm Wednesday: 9:00am – 3:00pm Thursday: 12:00pm – 4:00pm Friday: Closed #### Follow Us On: Send Us A Message Please use this form for general information purposes only. These are just a few of the health tests we offer at Wolfe Functional Medicine! ## FOOD SENSITIVITY/ALLERGY TESTING ### Food sensitivities and allergies can both impact your health, but sensitivities are often overlooked because they don’t always trigger an immediate reaction. Instead, they can create a delayed, cumulative inflammatory response that may contribute to symptoms such as digestive issues, fatigue, skin concerns, headaches, and more. In some cases, ongoing food-related inflammation may also play a role in immune system dysregulation, including autoimmune patterns. Testing helps identify how your body is responding to specific foods, allowing us to uncover hidden triggers that may be contributing to chronic inflammation. ### With this insight, we can create personalized nutrition strategies designed to reduce immune stress, support gut health, and promote overall balance and well-being. ## COMPREHENSIVE BLOODWORK: This testing provides a detailed look at your overall health by evaluating key biomarkers related to metabolism, immune function, hormones, nutrient status, and inflammation. Rather than simply flagging abnormal values, we assess patterns and subtle imbalances that may be affecting how your body is functioning. Comprehensive bloodwork can help uncover root contributors to symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes, mood imbalances, digestive concerns, and hormone disruption. By interpreting your results through a more functional and preventative lens, we can identify early shifts in physiology and use this information to guide personalized recommendations that support balance, energy, and long-term health. ## PCR COMPREHENSIVE DIAGNOSTIC STOOL ANALYSIS This test can identify if there is an imbalance in healthy gut flora and/or essential short chain fatty acids, as well as identify inflammatory markers. It also tells us which bacteria/parasites are responsible for any imbalance or infection and with which healthy bacteria (microflora) you may be experiencing deficiencies. With an additional add-on, it also allows us to confirm “Leaky Gut Syndrome”. That means that the tight junctions of gut lining become weak and often separate causing unwanted particles to pass through the lining and into the gut stream. This can cause a host of inflammatory health conditions, auto-immune diseases, depression and anxiety, as well as skin problems, just to name a few. ## HEAVY METAL TESTING This testing is designed to assess potential exposure to toxic heavy metals and other environmental elements that may accumulate in the body over time. These toxins can interfere with normal cellular function and may contribute to symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, hormonal imbalance, and immune dysregulation. In addition to identifying toxic burden, this test can also evaluate nutrient mineral status, helping to determine whether essential minerals are being depleted or imbalanced. Understanding both sides of this equation allows us to better support detoxification pathways, restore mineral balance, and optimize overall cellular health. ## SMALL INTESTINAL BACTERIAL OVERGROWTH (SIBO) BREATH TEST This test helps identify bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, a common but often overlooked condition that can significantly impact digestive function. SIBO may contribute to chronic symptoms such as bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, and nutrient malabsorption. By identifying the presence and pattern of overgrowth, we can better understand the underlying cause of digestive distress and guide targeted strategies to support gut balance, improve digestion, and restore optimal absorption and function. ## VITAMIN & NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY TESTING This comprehensive nutritional assessment evaluates key markers related to vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and overall metabolic function to provide a detailed picture of your body’s nutritional status. This testing looks at functional nutrient utilization at a cellular level, helping to determine what your body may be deficient in, not absorbing efficiently, or using at a higher demand due to stress, inflammation, or imbalance. It also assesses key pathways involved in energy production, detoxification, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter balance, and gut function, offering insight into how efficiently your body is producing energy and responding to internal stressors. As part of our comprehensive approach, we include advanced genetic and functional markers to identify how your unique physiology may impact absorption, metabolism, and overall requirements. This information allows for highly personalized nutrition and supplementation strategies designed to restore balance, improve energy, and support optimal long-term health. ## SALIVA AND URINE METABOLITE HORMONE TESTING This advanced hormone assessment evaluates key sex and adrenal hormones, including estrogen and androgen metabolites, to provide a comprehensive view of hormonal balance and detoxification pathways. Rather than only measuring hormone levels, it also assesses how hormones are metabolized and eliminated, offering deeper insight into endocrine function. A full diurnal cortisol pattern is included to evaluate adrenal rhythm and stress response throughout the day, along with melatonin (6-OHMS) to assess circadian rhythm and sleep regulation. Additional markers such as 8-OHdG provide insight into oxidative stress and cellular damage, while a comprehensive organic acids profile offers information on metabolic function, neurotransmitter activity, nutrient needs, and gut microbial balance. Together, this combination provides a detailed and functional view of hormone regulation, stress physiology, and cellular health that is not available through standard serum testing alone. ## MYCOTOXIN/MOLD INFECTION TESTING Mycotoxins are some of the most prevalent toxins in the environment. Mycotoxins are metabolites produced by fungi like mold, which can infest buildings, vehicles, and foodstuffs. These fungi then release mycotoxins into the environment causing symptoms of many different chronic diseases. Diseases and symptoms linked to mycotoxin exposure include fever, pneumonia-like symptoms, heart disease, rheumatic disease, asthma, sinusitis, cancer, memory loss, vision loss, chronic fatigue, skin rashes, depression, ADHD, anxiety, and liver damage. This is a very important test for “Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome”. ## LYME TESTING Early and late-stage Lyme (and co-infections) testing through PCR detection and IgeneX. This test is an immunoblot test + PCR vs. western blot and is found to be much more sensitive. This is completed through a blood test. --- title: "Disclaimer" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/disclaimer" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/disclaimer" lastmod: "2026-07-31T00:03:48.338Z" --- # HEALTH DISCLAIMER NOTES FOR THIS TEMPLATE *REMOVE THIS BLOCK BEFORE SAVING* A) ADD THE FOLLOWING PERSONALIZATION TOKENS UNDER SETTINGS -> PERSONALIZATIONS 1. business name = Wolfe Functional Medicine 2. business email = info@wolfefm.com 3. website url = drgingerwolfe.com 4. business phone = (303) 447-2225 5. business address = 921 Main St. Louisville, CO 80027 B) Add the update date of this policy at the end. Functional medicine is an approach to healthcare that focuses on addressing the root causes of disease, rather than just managing symptoms. It views the body as an interconnected whole and seeks to understand the underlying factors that contribute to illness, considering genetics, environment, and lifestyle. Key principles of functional medicine include: 1. Personalized Care: Treats each patient as an individual with unique genetic makeup, environment, and lifestyle factors. 2. Patient-Centered Approach: Emphasizes the importance of the patient-provider relationship and encourages active participation in healthcare decisions. 3. Holistic View: Considers all aspects of a patient’s health, including physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. 4. Integrative and Evidence-Based: Integrates traditional Western medicine with alternative approaches when appropriate, while relying on scientific evidence to guide treatment decisions. 5. Focus on Prevention: Emphasizes prevention of illness by promoting healthy behaviors and addressing risk factors before they lead to disease. Practitioners of functional medicine often spend more time with patients compared to traditional medical appointments, conducting detailed assessments of lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, stress levels, and sleep quality. When the gut becomes imbalanced or inflamed, symptoms can show up anywhere in the body, not just the stomach. Bloating, fatigue, skin issues, joint pain, food sensitivities, and brain fog are often early signs that the digestive system needs deeper support. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we help you understand what your symptoms are really telling you and uncover the root causes behind disrupted gut function. ## GI/Gut Health Comprehensive Gut Health at Wolfe Functional Medicine At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we take a deep, functional approach to uncovering the root causes of gastrointestinal symptoms. We utilize advanced testing such as PCR stool analysis, microbiome assessment, inflammatory markers, digestive enzyme evaluation, and intestinal permeability testing. This allows us to identify bacterial imbalance, yeast overgrowth, parasites, malabsorption, dysbiosis, low stomach acid, H. pylori, and chronic infections that are often overlooked in conventional GI evaluations. Because gut health is influenced by the entire metabolic and immune system, we also examine factors like chronic stress, toxin exposure, nutrient deficiencies, food intolerances, and hormonal shifts — each of which can directly impair digestion and motility. When the gut barrier becomes “leaky” or inflamed, it can trigger wide-ranging systemic symptoms, from joint pain and rashes to headaches and autoimmunity. Plans are highly individualized and may include targeted antimicrobial or antifungal support, digestive enzymes, gut-directed antioxidants, probiotics and prebiotics, mucosal healing nutrients, detoxification support, and personalized nutrition. We also address lifestyle and stress patterns that impact the gut–brain axis and overall digestive resilience. Our goal is simple: restore balance to the digestive system so your body can absorb nutrients efficiently, eliminate waste properly, and function at its highest level. Whether you’re dealing with chronic bloating, IBS, SIBO, GERD, reflux, constipation, or unresolved digestive symptoms, we help you understand why your gut is out of balance — and guide you toward lasting relief and long-term healing. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we know how frustrating digestive symptoms can be — and how much they affect your daily life. Our approach is centered on understanding you—your history, your patterns, and what your gut has been trying to tell you. Through thoughtful testing and personalized care, we help you calm inflammation, support healthy digestion, and rebuild a gut that feels stable and resilient again. --- title: "Home Copy" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/home-copy" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/home-copy" lastmod: "2026-07-31T00:03:48.570Z" --- # We Welcome New Patients! These shifts aren’t “just aging” or “in your head," they’re your body’s way of signaling that something deeper needs support. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we look beyond symptoms to identify the root causes of imbalance and help you restore natural harmony, vitality, and confidence in your health. # Hormone Balance ✦ Comprehensive Hormone Balance: Hormone fluctuations involving estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol can create fatigue, anxiety, irregular cycles, weight changes, and mood instability. Rather than masking these issues, we focus on why they’re occurring—whether from nutrient deficiencies, impaired detoxification, chronic stress, gut dysbiosis, or blood sugar instability. Our comprehensive approach includes: * Functional hormone testing using saliva, urine, and bloodspot panels. * Nutrient therapy to enhance estrogen clearance, progesterone production, and androgen balance. * Botanical and adaptogenic support for adrenal and HPA-axis regulation. * Hormone Replenishment Therapy (HRT) (when clinically appropriate). * Personalized nutrition and detox strategies to improve hormone metabolism and balance. ✦ The Power of Saliva, Urine, and Bloodspot Testing Traditional serum blood tests provide only a snapshot in time and may miss daily hormonal rhythms or metabolite activity. Saliva and urine testing allow us to measure free (active) hormones and their metabolites, offering insight into adrenal function, estrogen detoxification, and cortisol rhythm throughout the day. Bloodspot testing provides a convenient and accurate method to monitor hormone markers. These testing methods deliver a more complete understanding of your hormonal patterns, helping us craft precise, individualized protocols. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we believe hormone health is foundational to whole-body wellness. By combining advanced testing with a functional, root-cause approach, we uncover the “why” behind imbalance and create personalized solutions that bring your body back into harmony. Our goal isn’t just to balance numbers, it’s to help you feel clear, resilient, strong, and vibrant in your own skin again. Hormones affect everything from energy, mood, metabolism, sleep, and weight to skin, libido, and brain function. When they’re out of sync, every system in your body feels it. --- title: "Lyme" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/lyme" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/lyme" lastmod: "2026-07-31T00:03:48.532Z" --- # Lyme Disease ## Understanding Lyme Disease Lyme disease is far more complex than a single infection. In many cases, Lyme comes with co-infections such as Bartonella, Babesia, Ehrlichia, or Mycoplasma - each contributing its own symptoms and immune challenges. These pathogens can hide within tissues, disrupt cellular energy production, inflame the nervous system, and trigger long-term immune dysfunction. For many patients, this leads to chronic symptoms long after the initial bite, even when early tests were negative or symptoms were dismissed. # Lyme Disease: At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we take a systems-based approach to uncover the full picture of Lyme and co-infection patterns. Using advanced diagnostics such as specialty Lyme panels, inflammatory markers, immune profiling, Organic Acid Testing, and gut-immune assessment, we identify the underlying drivers of persistent symptoms. Our evaluation looks beyond infection alone - we assess mitochondrial health, detoxification capacity, adrenal function, gut integrity, and the inflammatory pathways that determine how the body responds to chronic tick-borne illness. Because Lyme can mimic conditions like autoimmune disease, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, mold illness, and neurological disorders, identifying the root cause is essential for meaningful recovery. Many patients have a combination of infections, toxic exposures, and immune dysfunction that require a layered, individualized plan. Plans may include targeted antimicrobial therapy (botanical or nutraceutical), immune modulation, mitochondrial support, detoxification enhancement, anti-inflammatory strategies, and gut-brain axis repair. We also address nutrient deficiencies, sleep disruption, and hormonal imbalance, all of which can worsen Lyme symptoms and slow healing. Our goal is not only symptom relief but the restoration of your body’s ability to regulate inflammation, fight infection, and rebuild strength. With the right clinical strategy, patients often experience improved energy, clearer cognition, reduced pain, more stable mood, and a renewed sense of resilience. --- title: "Mal De Debarquement Syndrome" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/mal-de-debarquement-syndrome" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/mal-de-debarquement-syndrome" lastmod: "2026-08-29T08:47:04.057Z" --- ## MAL DE DEBARQUEMENT SYNDROME Understanding Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by a persistent sensation of motion, typically described as rocking, swaying, or bobbing. This condition often follows exposure to passive motion, such as sea travel, but can also occur spontaneously. Patients may experience accompanying symptoms like fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli. -drgingerwolfe.com -pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov -axonintegrativehealth.com Dr. Wolfe's Personal Journey with MdDS Dr. Ginger Wolfe brings a unique perspective to treating MdDS, having personally experienced and achieved remission from the condition. Her firsthand experience fuels her dedication to helping others navigate the complexities of MdDS through functional approaches. Functional Medicine Approach to MdDS At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we adopt a holistic, patient-centered strategy to address MdDS, focusing on identifying underlying causes rather than merely alleviating symptoms. Our approach includes: 1. Comprehensive Assessments - Genetic Testing: Identifying polymorphisms that may affect neurotransmitter function and detoxification pathways. - Hormonal and Neurotransmitter Evaluations: Assessing hormone and neurotransmitter levels to detect imbalances that could contribute to neurological symptoms. - Methylation Pathway Analysis: Evaluating methylation processes that influence neurological health. 2 . For many, these sensations are accompanied by fatigue, anxiety, dizziness, cognitive fog, or imbalance that can deeply impact daily life. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, Dr. Ginger Wolfe offers a uniquely personal and evidence-based approach to MdDS care. Having experienced MdDS herself and achieved remission, Dr. Wolfe brings both clinical expertise and firsthand understanding to each patient she treats. Since 2019, she has helped individuals across the country recover function and stability through an advanced functional medicine lens. While there is currently no definitive cure for MdDS, functional medicine provides meaningful tools to address the underlying contributors that perpetuate the brain’s maladaptive “motion perception” loop. Dr. Wolfe has observed consistent biochemical and hormonal patterns among MdDS patients, including dysregulated stress hormone output, impaired detoxification pathways, and neural inflammation. Her comprehensive treatment plans often include: - Advanced genetic and hormone testing to uncover root contributors - Targeted nutrient and mitochondrial support for neural repair and detoxification - Catecholamine regulation strategies to calm overstimulation of the brain and HPA axis - Lifestyle and movement-based exercises to retrain sensory integration and promote neuroplasticity Relapse-prevention protocols to sustain remission and support long-term stability Dr. Wolfe’s functional approach is tailored to each individual—focusing on rebalancing the brain, body, and biochemical systems that sustain recovery. Many patients report not only a reduction in rocking sensations but also improved mental clarity, resilience, and energy as their systems regain equilibrium. MdDS can be complex, but recovery is possible with the right approach. Dr. Wolfe understands MdDS firsthand and offers comprehensive, personalized support to help you recover balance and restore quality of life. You don’t have to face it alone. These toxins inflame the immune system, drain mitochondrial energy, and interfere with hormones, brain function, and gut balance. Symptoms often seem unrelated- fatigue, brain fog, sinus issues, anxiety, digestive problems, or chronic inflammation, which is why mold illness is frequently missed or misdiagnosed. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we help you uncover whether mold is the hidden driver behind your symptoms and guide you toward a clear, effective path to recovery. # Mold & Mycotoxin Recovery Mold & Mycotoxin Support at Wolfe Functional Medicine Mold and mycotoxin exposure can trigger a powerful inflammatory response that affects the entire body. For many patients, this shows up as unrelenting fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, gut issues, sinus congestion, muscle pain, skin rashes, and sleep disturbances, yet standard medical testing often overlooks the underlying cause. Mycotoxins are potent biochemical disruptors, capable of impairing mitochondrial function, hormone balance, detoxification pathways, and immune signaling. When the body cannot properly eliminate these toxins, inflammation becomes chronic, creating a cycle that is extremely difficult to break without targeted support. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we specialize in identifying mold-related illness and mycotoxin toxicity using an individualized, root-cause approach. We utilize advanced diagnostics such as urinary mycotoxin testing, stool analysis, Organic Acid Testing, inflammatory biomarkers, and CIRS-related labs to uncover the full picture of what your system is facing. For patients who meet criteria for Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), we apply key elements of the Shoemaker Protocol and integrate them into a broader functional medicine framework. Because mold toxicity often coexists with fungal overgrowth (including Candida) we evaluate both simultaneously. These toxins frequently amplify each other, creating more severe symptoms and prolonging recovery when not addressed together. By supporting detoxification, restoring gut integrity, calming immune activation, and improving mitochondrial health, we help the body correct this imbalance at its core. Plans may include targeted binders, antioxidant support, gut repair, antifungal therapy, nutritional repletion, and lifestyle strategies to reduce ongoing toxin exposure. Many patients experience significant improvements in energy, mental clarity, mood, and physical resilience as inflammation resolves. Mold illness is overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we help you identify the root cause, detoxify safely, and rebuild your health with a clear, step-by-step plan tailored to your needs. --- title: "Mold Mycotoxins Lyme" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/mold-mycotoxins-lyme" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/mold-mycotoxins-lyme" lastmod: "2026-07-31T00:03:49.005Z" --- ## Mold/Mycotoxin & Candida Identify the Root Cause. Detoxify. Rebalance: If you’ve been struggling with fatigue, brain fog, digestive issues, or chronic inflammation, the cause may be deeper than you realize. Hidden infections and toxin exposures — such as Candida overgrowth and [mold](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/mold)-related illness — often coexist and reinforce each other, creating a cycle of immune dysfunction and toxicity that standard medical testing frequently misses. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we specialize in advanced testing and personalized treatment for mold, mycotoxin, and Candida-related illness. These conditions share overlapping symptoms and biological pathways, and when addressed together, recovery is faster and more complete. Our team is also well-versed in the Shoemaker Protocol, an evidence-based framework for diagnosing and treating Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) related to mold and biotoxin exposure. We integrate the key elements of this approach into a broader functional medicine model designed to rebalance the gut, immune, and detoxification systems at their root. Candida Overgrowth: The Hidden Contributor: Candida is a yeast that naturally lives in the digestive tract, mouth, and mucosal tissues. However, under stress, after antibiotic use, or in the presence of environmental toxins like mold, Candida can overgrow and release toxic byproducts, burdening the liver and intensifying inflammation. Common signs of Candida imbalance include: li]:pl-0 [&>li]:marker:text-current [&>li]:marker:text-[1.2em] [&>li]:marker:font-normal">- Sugar or carbohydrate cravings - Bloating, digestive discomfort, or constipation - Brain fog or poor concentration - Recurrent yeast or urinary tract infections - Skin irritation, itching, or rashes - Fatigue and low motivation Because Candida toxins and mycotoxins often circulate together, addressing one without the other can leave the root imbalance unresolved. Our protocols are designed to correct both simultaneously for more sustainable healing. Mold and Mycotoxin Illness: A Systemic Disruptor: Mold exposure—especially after water damage or flooding—can lead to the release of mycotoxins, which are highly inflammatory compounds that interfere with mitochondrial energy production, hormone balance, and immune signaling. For individuals with certain genetic variations (including HLA-DR, MTHFR, and detox pathway SNPs), these toxins can accumulate more readily, leading to chronic inflammation and neurological symptoms. Common symptoms of mold toxicity include: li]:pl-0 [&>li]:marker:text-current [&>li]:marker:text-[1.2em] [&>li]:marker:font-normal">- Persistent fatigue or post-exertional malaise li]:pl-0 [&>li]:marker:text-current [&>li]:marker:text-[1.2em] [&>li]:marker:font-normal">- Brain fog, confusion, or short-term memory issues li]:pl-0 [&>li]:marker:text-current [&>li]:marker:text-[1.2em] [&>li]:marker:font-normal">- Muscle and joint pain li]:pl-0 [&>li]:marker:text-current [&>li]:marker:text-[1.2em] [&>li]:marker:font-normal">- Skin rashes, itching, or histamine reactions li]:pl-0 [&>li]:marker:text-current [&>li]:marker:text-[1.2em] [&>li]:marker:font-normal">- Sinus congestion, shortness of breath, or chronic cough li]:pl-0 [&>li]:marker:text-current [&>li]:marker:text-[1.2em] [&>li]:marker:font-normal">- Anxiety, depression, or sleep disturbances If left unaddressed, this can progress into Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS)—a complex condition where the immune system remains in overdrive even after mold exposure has ended. Our Functional Medicine Approach: At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we use data-driven diagnostics and individualized protocols to uncover and address the root causes of mold and Candida-related illness. Our evaluation and care process may include: Comprehensive laboratory testing for mycotoxins, fungal markers, and gut dysbiosis (including urinary mycotoxin analysis, GI MAP, and Organic Acid Testing) CIRS-informed assessment using elements of the Shoemaker Protocol, including biomarkers such as MMP-9, C4a, TGF-β1, and VIP Detoxification support using targeted binders (such as charcoal, chlorella, or bentonite) and nutrients to enhance bile flow, glutathione production, and mitochondrial function Antifungal and antimicrobial therapy—botanical and nutraceutical—to reduce fungal burden Gut restoration and immune modulation protocols to rebalance the microbiome and restore mucosal integrity Nutritional and lifestyle optimization to strengthen detoxification and reduce inflammatory load This multi-layered approach addresses the toxin source, immune response, and detox pathways simultaneously, ensuring long-term recovery and resilience. Recovery and Long-Term Resilience: Healing from mold and mycotoxin exposure is possible with the right combination of diagnostics, detox support, and immune recalibration. Many patients notice marked improvements in energy, cognition, mood, and gut function once the inflammatory loop is broken. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we integrate functional medicine, nutritional science, and the Shoemaker Protocol to help you: li]:pl-0 [&>li]:marker:text-current [&>li]:marker:text-[1.2em] [&>li]:marker:font-normal">- Safely eliminate biotoxins and mycotoxins - Restore mitochondrial and immune balance - Rebuild gut and liver function - Prevent recurrence through education, environment remediation guidance, and ongoing monitoring. Take the Next Step Toward Healing: If you’ve been living with unexplained fatigue, brain fog, or chronic inflammatory symptoms, it’s time to uncover the underlying cause. Wolfe Functional Medicine offers advanced testing, individualized protocols, and clinical expertise in both Candida and mold-related illness, including the Shoemaker Protocol for CIRS. In one month on her Functional Medicine supplementation and diet program, I’ve lost nine pounds and have felt dramatic gains in digestive health, quality sleep, stamina and recovery. With Dr. Wolfe’s guidance, I’m very excited by the prospect of continued mountaineering improvement and success.” – Clint F. “Go see Dr. Wolfe now! I struggled for years with GI issues and couldn’t seem to make progress in getting control of my health. Within a month of becoming a patient of Dr. Wolfe, I started to see results and have continued to see progress over the past year. I feel like a completely different person now! I’ve had many issues to work through and Dr. Wolfe has been encouraging, thoughtful, kind, and is constantly reviewing the latest research and trends in the field to help support my health. I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Wolfe!” – Annie K. “I have had a lot of problems in my joints which have caused me to have several surgeries, the most recent being a second left hip replacement. After working with Dr. Wolfe, my surrounding bones and joints feel much better which is what I was hoping for. Also, my muscles feel better. I love that she tells me what to do to alleviate certain pains that I feel after exercising, especially after riding my bike. She takes time to listen to my concerns and works with me to personalize my treatments. I would say that she has a magical touch that helps to heal my body!” – Gina B. “I would give 10 stars if it was an option! I am seeing Dr. Wolfe for Functional Medicine and within the first 10 minutes of my appointment, she knew exactly what was going on with me. She is kind, compassionate, wise and a great listener. I trust her completely!!!” – Linda B. “I have been under Dr. Wolfe’s Care for nine months now since she started me on a low sugar, no grains diet to reduce inflammation and ultimately get me off blood pressure medicine. I had been on BP meds for over 18 years. I have now been totally off all meds for 7 months. Yesterday my BP was 118/68. I can’t recommend Dr. Wolfe enough. She’s an awesome, caring person who genuinely loves taking care of her patients.” – Bill G. “Dr. Wolfe is probably one of my favorite medical professionals. Yes, I’m acquainted with a few. She is thorough, kind, honest, and so pleasant. I have been going to her for a few months now and she has made suggestions but never ever pressured me. She understands where people are in life and never over steps but every time I go see her I feel like I’m going to a friend’s home. I drive from Arvada. Also, the office administrator is wonderful. She works so hard to make each patient feel comfortable and at home. She is disarmingly kind and caring and remembers who you are and sees you as a person not a number. Two paragraphs later..I HIGHLY recommend this office and Dr. Wolfe.” – Karina K. “So grateful we were referred to Dr. Wolfe by a family member a few months ago! Our 5-month-old boy was having trouble eating (hurting tummy) and gaining weight. We were in and out of hospitals because no one could figure out why he wouldn’t eat as much as he was supposed to and were concerned about his low weight (0 percentile on the growth chart). After the first two weeks of seeing Dr. Wolfe he was eating double what he could normally eat in one sitting and without all the crying and curling up. He is now gaining weight steadily and eating normally…If you are debating on going in, stop putting it off. Just go!” – Katie K. “Dr. Wolfe is well-informed on inflammatory conditions and much more. I trust her.” – Carol C. “Dr. Ginger Wolfe is an incredible doctor, caring person, and has a very organized practice. Getting treated by her is a great experience from start to end. When the thyroid underperforms (even slightly) it can disrupt metabolism, energy, mood, digestion, hormone balance, and cognitive clarity. Many people live with symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, depression, cold intolerance, hair thinning, constipation, or brain fog despite being told their thyroid labs are “normal.” At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we look deeper. Your symptoms matter, and they often reveal thyroid dysfunction long before a standard TSH test does. ## Thyroid Optimization: ✦ Thyroid Optimization Our thyroid evaluation extends far beyond conventional screening. We analyze a comprehensive panel including Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies (TPO and TgAb) to detect hypothyroidism, conversion issues, and early autoimmune activity like Hashimoto’s disease. We also measure nutrient cofactors including iodine, selenium, zinc, ferritin, B vitamins, omega-3s, and vitamin D that drive hormone production, conversion, and receptor sensitivity. Because the thyroid doesn’t work in isolation, we assess the gut, liver, adrenal glands, immune system, and inflammatory load. Factors such as chronic stress, blood sugar instability, toxin exposure, infections, and intestinal permeability can all interfere with thyroid function or trigger autoimmune thyroid disorders. Identifying these root causes allows for targeted, long-lasting improvement rather than temporary symptom relief. We also take a deeper look at symptom patterns that are often overlooked in standard care, including fatigue, weight fluctuations, hair thinning, mood changes, brain fog, constipation, and temperature sensitivity. Even when standard lab values fall within the “normal” range, these symptoms can signal suboptimal thyroid function that deserves attention. By combining advanced lab interpretation with a detailed clinical history, we build a complete picture of your thyroid health. Our approach emphasizes ongoing monitoring and adjustment, ensuring that your treatment evolves with your body. As your physiology shifts and improves, we refine your protocol to maintain progress and prevent setbacks. Education is also a key part of our process. We empower you to understand how your thyroid works and how daily habits directly impact hormone balance. Treatment plans are customized and may include nutrient repletion, anti-inflammatory support, adrenal balancing, gut restoration, improved detoxification capacity, and lifestyle strategies tailored to your physiology. When appropriate, we collaborate on personalized thyroid medication management, including T4, T3, or combination therapies for optimal cellular response. Our mission is to restore efficient thyroid function so your energy, metabolism, and mental clarity return to their natural rhythm. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we don’t settle for “within range.” We help you achieve true thyroid optimization and feel fully yourself again. --- title: "Thyroid Hormone Imbalance" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/thyroid-hormone-imbalance" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/thyroid-hormone-imbalance" lastmod: "2026-07-31T00:03:49.637Z" --- # HORMONE IMBALANCE AND THYROID CONDITIONS Hormonal and thyroid imbalances can quietly influence nearly every system in the body-affecting energy, mood, weight, sleep, libido, and overall resilience. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we don’t just chase symptoms; we uncover the root causes behind hormone and thyroid disruption. Our functional medicine hormone and thyroid programs are designed to identify underlying imbalances, optimize physiology, and restore long-term balance through advanced diagnostics and targeted, data-driven care. ## Hormone Balance: ✦ Comprehensive Hormone Balance Hormone fluctuations involving estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol can create fatigue, anxiety, irregular cycles, weight changes, and mood instability. Rather than masking these issues, we focus on why they’re occurring—whether from nutrient deficiencies, impaired detoxification, chronic stress, gut dysbiosis, or blood sugar instability. Our comprehensive approach includes: - Functional hormone testing using saliva, urine, and bloodspot panels - Nutrient therapy to enhance estrogen clearance, progesterone production, and androgen balance - Botanical and adaptogenic support for adrenal and HPA-axis regulation - Hormone Replenishment Therapy (HRT) (when clinically appropriate) - Personalized nutrition and detox strategies to improve hormone metabolism and balance ✦ The Power of Saliva, Urine, and Bloodspot Testing Traditional serum blood tests provide only a snapshot in time and may miss daily hormonal rhythms or metabolite activity. Saliva and urine testing allow us to measure free (active) hormones and their metabolites, offering insight into adrenal function, estrogen detoxification, and cortisol rhythm throughout the day. Bloodspot testing provides a convenient, accurate at-home method to monitor progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid markers. These testing methods deliver a more complete understanding of your hormonal patterns, helping us craft precise, individualized treatment protocols. ## Thyroid Conditions: ✦ Thyroid Optimization Thyroid health is foundational to metabolism, mood, and energy—and yet conventional medicine often overlooks the nuances of how this small gland functions. Many patients are told their thyroid labs are “normal” despite symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, depression, hair loss, cold intolerance, or brain fog. Functional medicine goes deeper to identify why the thyroid is struggling rather than simply adjusting medication doses. Our comprehensive thyroid evaluation looks beyond TSH to include Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies (TPO, TgAb) to detect both underactive thyroid and early autoimmune activity. We also assess nutrient cofactors like selenium, iodine, zinc, ferritin, and vitamin D—key players in thyroid hormone conversion and receptor sensitivity. Because the thyroid does not function in isolation, we evaluate gut, liver, adrenal, and immune health—each of which can profoundly affect thyroid output and conversion. Chronic infections, intestinal permeability, toxin exposure, and stress can all trigger autoimmune thyroid disorders like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Our approach focuses on: - Reducing thyroid inflammation and antibody activity - Supporting T4-to-T3 conversion and cellular uptake - Balancing the HPA axis and adrenal response - Restoring gut integrity and liver detoxification capacity - Collaborating on individualized medication management when necessary Through this integrated lens, we help patients achieve true thyroid optimization—not just symptom control. --- title: "Thyroid Hormone Imbalance Copy" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/thyroid-hormone-imbalance-copy" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/thyroid-hormone-imbalance-copy" lastmod: "2026-07-31T00:03:49.953Z" --- # HORMONE IMBALANCE AND THYROID CONDITIONS Hormone & Thyroid Health – A Functional Medicine Approach Hormonal and thyroid imbalances can lead to symptoms like fatigue, mood swings, weight gain, insomnia, hair loss, and irregular cycles. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we don’t just treat symptoms—we investigate the root cause using advanced functional testing and personalized protocols. REQUEST APPOINTMENT ✦ Common Conditions We Address: - Estrogen dominance - Androgen excess & PCOS - Perimenopause & menopause - Adrenal fatigue / HPA axis dysfunction - Hypothyroidism & Hashimoto’s - PMS, low libido, cycle irregularities ✦ Natural Hormone Balance Solutions We use a whole-body, evidence-based approach to help rebalance hormones through: - Comprehensive hormone testing (including DUTCH and blood panels) - Nutrient therapy for estrogen clearance, progesterone support, and androgen regulation - Botanical medicine & adaptogens for mood, cycle, and stress support - Bioidentical hormone replenishment therapy (when appropriate) - Diet & lifestyle strategies to improve detoxification, blood sugar, and hormone metabolism ✦ Thyroid Optimization - Most conventional panels only look at TSH—but we go deeper. Our thyroid evaluation includes: - Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, TPO antibodies - Nutrient co-factors (iodine, selenium, iron, zinc) - Gut, liver, and adrenal function —all key for thyroid conversion and balance - Natural protocols for Hashimoto’s, subclinical hypothyroidism, and fatigue-related thyroid issues If you're tired of being told your labs are “normal” while you still feel off, our functional medicine hormone and thyroid programs can help you get real answers—and real results. --- title: "Weight Loss" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/weight-loss" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/weight-loss" lastmod: "2026-07-31T00:03:48.261Z" --- # Weight Loss ## Understanding Weight Loss Weight loss isn’t just about calories and exercise, it’s about chemistry. When hormones, metabolism, gut health, inflammation, or stress hormones are out of balance, the body can become resistant to fat loss no matter how “perfect” your diet or workouts are. If you’ve been gaining weight despite doing everything “right,” the issue isn’t willpower, it’s physiology. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we help identify the metabolic roadblocks that keep the body stuck and create a clear, science-based path forward. ## Functional Weight Loss Sustainable weight loss begins with understanding why the body is holding onto weight in the first place. For many people, issues like insulin resistance, cortisol dysregulation, hormonal imbalances, gut inflammation, thyroid dysfunction, chronic stress, nutrient deficiencies, or toxin overload quietly interfere with metabolism long before weight gain becomes visible. Traditional programs often focus on restriction without addressing these root causes, which is why temporary results are common, and long-term success is rare. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we take a comprehensive, metabolic approach to weight loss. Using advanced testing, we evaluate blood sugar patterns, insulin levels, thyroid function, adrenal health, inflammation markers, gut microbiome status, nutrient deficiencies, genetics, and hormonal patterns. This gives us a detailed map of how your metabolism is functioning and what needs to shift for your body to begin losing weight comfortably and consistently. Because no two bodies gain weight for the same reason, plans are highly individualized. They may include targeted nutrition, blood sugar stabilization, inflammation reduction, hormone optimization, mitochondrial support, gut repair, detoxification strategies, and personalized supplement protocols. When appropriate, we use evidence-based tools such as metabolic support nutrients and weight-loss medications in a thoughtful, root-cause manner. Our goal is to help your body work with you again- improving energy, sleep, digestion, and hormone balance so weight loss becomes a natural byproduct of restored metabolic health. Most importantly, we focus on long-term, sustainable changes rather than quick fixes or restrictive diets. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we know how frustrating stubborn weight gain can be — especially when you’re doing everything you can. We help you understand the “why” behind weight changes. Our focus is on healing the systems that drive metabolism so your body can finally respond the way it’s meant to. With personalized guidance and a root-cause approach, we help you rebuild balance, confidence, and a healthier relationship with your body from the inside out. --- title: "What Can We Improve" entity: "page" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/what-can-we-improve" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/page/what-can-we-improve" lastmod: "2026-07-31T00:03:48.668Z" --- # WHAT CAN WE IMPROVE We love to hear from our clients, please let us know if there are any areas that you think we could improve upon. When that rhythm is working well, cortisol rises in the morning to wake you up and gradually declines throughout the day so your body can rest at night. When the rhythm becomes disrupted, the timing signals that control sleep and energy can become misaligned. Why Some People Feel “Wired but Tired” Chronic stress can flatten or invert the body’s natural cortisol curve. Instead of feeling energized in the morning and relaxed at night, many people experience: • Exhaustion when they wake up • Brain fog during the afternoon • A sudden “second wind” late at night • Difficulty falling or staying asleep Understanding these patterns can reveal why symptoms persist even when lab results appear normal. Inside This Free Guide You'll Discover • How healthy cortisol rhythms support sleep and energy • What a disrupted stress response looks like • The common symptoms of cortisol imbalance • Visual examples of healthy vs disrupted patterns Created by Dr. Ginger Wolfe, Functional Medicine Practitioner Helping patients identify the root causes behind fatigue, stress imbalance, and sleep disruption. --- title: "5 SIGNS YOU MAY HAVE A CANDIDA PROBLEM IN BOULDER | Wolfe Functional Medicine" entity: "blog" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/blog/5-signs-you-may-have-a-candida-problem-in-boulder" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/blog/5-signs-you-may-have-a-candida-problem-in-boulder" lastmod: "2024-02-01T15:15:00.000Z" --- When someone says Yeast Infection your mind may go straight to one of those “things” that only women have to deal with. Think again! Candida Albicans (commonly known as yeast) can live naturally in our guts in small numbers- meaning the good bacteria or microflora of your gut keep it in check. But, if something tips the scales like a physical, chemical or emotional stressor, look out! This little fungus can turn into a nasty pathogen and throw a party in your gut and then your body – aka Systemic Candida. Curious if this may be happening to you? Here are 5 signs you may be dealing with an overgrowth of [Candida in Boulder](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/). ### 5 SIGNS YOU ARE DEALING WITH OVERGROWTH OF CANDIDA IN BOULDER CO - Foggy Head – You can’t think straight, you feel a bit heady and spacey, and possibly have a mild headache. Candida releases nearly 80 byproducts, one of which being the powerful neurotoxin acetaldehyde. In addition to this crossing the blood-brain barrier, too many toxins in your system means that your liver is getting bombed and can’t keep up. Think mild hangover. Not fun! - Fatigue – Those neurotoxins and byproducts can also make you feel exhausted and bogged down. In addition, Candida is usually more active at night while you’re trying to sleep. Although you may be catching your Zzz’s, you may not be getting the most restful type of sleep. - Skin Problems – If your liver gets overly taxed with toxins, those toxins find their way out of your body another way! It’s common for patients with Candida overgrowth to have red, itchy, or peeling skin, dry patches, or excessive acne. - Sinus Problems – Chronic sinus problems are usually a result of fungal infections like candida or mold. These pesky little buggers like to hang out in warm, dark, moist ( eww, moist!) Your sinuses are the perfect place for them to set up camp. - Constipation/ Diarrhea/ Excessive Gas – Is your gut acting up? Have you been on an excessive amount of antibiotics (more than 5x) in your lifetime? Have you had a bit too much alcohol and sugar? There’s a high probability that Candida is becoming a big player in your gut. Once it’s got a good grasp (literally as it roots down into your gut lining) it then creates a “leaky gut” situation. From here it can enter the bloodstream and boom!- you’ve got Systemic Candida. If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms we are here to help! Call us at [303-447-2225](tel:3034472225) to schedule your FREE Preliminary Functional Medicine Consult and find out how you can rid your body of Candida naturally! For some folks, February 14 th might make you want to throw a shoe at the happy couples out there so here’s a bit of heart-healthy advice that is centered completely on YOU! Here are 5 tips from your [Boulder chiropractor](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/) to staying heart healthy and happy: 1. Nix The Sugar! We know that the shelves are lined with sweets and candy right now but sugar and insulin resistance are some of the biggest contributors to cardiovascular disease. Sugar causes inflammation and inflammation causes stress to your vascular system and therefore your heart. If you need a small cheat (it’s all about balance), go for dark chocolate that is at least 70% cocoa or higher. 2. Get Out There And Move! Get your blood flowing and your heart pumping. Your heart, just like any other muscle in your body needs to be exercised. This will also help flush out toxins that can contribute to additional vascular inflammation. And exercise is proven to boost your mood as well – yay! 3. Single? Awesome! Being “self-partnered” comes with perks like not having to take care of anyone but you. Celebrate your badass self this month by doing something good for yourself and something that makes you happy ! 4. Supplement! It can be really difficult to get all the nutrients and vitamins you need strictly through diet. Heart-healthy supplements like Vitamin C, Co Q 10 and Magnesium are excellent options for cardiovascular support. Show your heart a little love with these little helpers! MdDS in itself will absolutely upregulate anxiety, and although not a pleasant experience, is very much consistent with the condition. Anyone living with a continuous rocking or bobbing sensation is going to feel somewhat tortured and uncomfortable, wondering if it will ever stop! So please, if you are suffering from MdDS and your anxiety is through the roof as a result, try your best to breathe and know that there is help for this anxious feeling. Contact our [Functional Medicine clinic in Boulder CO](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/) today to schedule an appointment. ### DEALING WITH ANXIETY IN BOULDER CO? Another interesting observation is that most patients who develop MdDS, Vestibular Migraines, or 3PD (Persistent Postural Perceptive Dizziness) have always dealt with anxiety on some level. Why is this? From the test we have ordered here at Wolfe Functional Medicine, we have noticed a congruent genetic variant amongst all patients with these disorders: they are either homozygous or heterozygous for a COMT (catechol-O- methyltransferase) genetic variant. We call this a COMT Snp (snip). Individuals with a COMT Snp have difficulty metabolizing dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine and estrogens. The build-up of these excitatory neurotransmitters can cause anxiety and further tax the HPA axis increasing cortisol levels 24 hours a day. So, if someone tells you that you need to relax and meditate more, it’s really not that simple. This is a biochemical process in your body that will not stop with only lifestyle changes. Furthermore, if dopamine is continually building up in your system, you can end up with an excess of quinone chemicals which are very harmful to the brain (for more on this, read Dirty Genes by Dr. Ben Lynch). This is one of the reasons I believe people develop MdDS and other rocking or bobbing types of dizziness. The good news is that these genetic Snps can be managed with herbal supplements. The ill effects of poor methylation and difficulty breaking down these excitatory chemicals can be helped with supplements like B6, B12, Folate, Magnesium and SAMe. Please note that these supplements and dosages should be recommended and monitored under the direction of a trained practitioner. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we understand that suffering from anxiety in addition to MdDS, Vestibular Migraines or 3PD, makes it very difficult to function and maintain a normal daily life and we would be honored to help. That’s fine as long as it’s just occasional. But if you’re finding yourself crying over every little thing, or losing your temper over burnt toast, it might be time to take a closer look at your estrogen levels and reign them in. Let me start by saying that estrogen itself is a good thing and an essential part of staying a healthy woman. It’s both immunoprotective and neuroprotective, it helps our skin glow, it boosts our mood and it keeps us feeling sexy. As women, we need estrogen! We just don’t need too much of it. That’s when things start to go awry. This could happen at any age but is more common when women are in their perimenopausal years. As far as the signs and symptoms go, you may have just one, some, or all and still be dealing with too much estrogen. ### HERE ARE 5 SIGNS YOU COULD BE DEALING WITH ESTROGEN DOMINANCE. - Mood Swings – You might find yourself reacting to situations in ways that just don’t seem, shall we say “normal”. And you know it! But you just can’t seem to control it. It’s like PMS on steroids! - Weight Gain, etc . – Usually the weight gain is unexplained and extremely hard to lose! I often say that “estrogen likes to grow things”. It could be weight gain around the mid-section, hips and thighs, consistent belly bloat or unusually swollen breasts. On a more serious level it can be associated with things like fibroids, or even cancer (see metabolite testing below!). - Fatigue – You may notice that you just don’t have the energy, strength and endurance that you once had. You used to wake up ready to take on the day and now you’re just feeling slightly heavy and lethargic all the time. Not to mention your sex drive…where did that go? - Irregular, Heavy & Painful Periods – Your cycle may be a few days early or a few days late, it could be accompanied by more severe cramping, or maybe it’s heavier than what it normally is or what anyone should have to endure. Why has no one ever warned you about this?! - Inflammation – Feeling stiff and noticing more aches and pains? Maybe you just look and feel puffy? Estrogen is metabolized along three major pathways. Two of these pathways can be very oxidative to our bodies; the 4-OHE1 and 16-OHE1 routes. Too much estrogen being metabolized into the 4’s and 16’s is inflammatory, disruptive and could have serious repercussions to our health! It’s also the reason why I test all the hormones AND their metabolites. Luckily, through supplementation and lifestyle changes, we can bring estrogen to healthy levels, balance your hormones and get you back to your good ol’ self again! Testing is simple and performed at home through a urine sample, as it’s much more accurate than blood. Please see below for scheduling. We would love to take care of you! Unfortunately, leaky gut is often a master of disguise and its long term not-so-obvious signs can cause some major health issues. If you’d like to make an appointment you can contact Wolfe Functional Medicine at [(303) 447-2225](tel:3034472225) . Please note, if you have developed leaky gut due to an infection (this could be silent or acute) you will also need to remove that infection in order to effectively heal your gut. ### SO, LET’S BREAK IT DOWN. WHAT IS A LEAKY GUT? Your gut lining has a series of folds, kind of like an accordion that’s closed. In between those folds are something called tight junctions which, you guessed it, keep the gut lining tight and sealed up. If it doesn’t keep its seal, then the wrong things can slip through the openings in the lining and into the blood stream. This is where your immune system comes into play. Your immune system says, what the heck is that and why is it in our blood stream? It then sends off a combat team called “cytokines” to attack the foreign particles. This causes an infamous condition known as “inflammation.” Having an inflammatory response is necessary for the body to keep things in check and fight off the bad guys. The problem with leaky gut is this inflammatory process is not short term. Let’s take gluten for example since everyone seems to be talking about it these days. Gluten contains a protein called gliadin which some people are sensitive to. This can be (non-celiac gluten sensitivity). Gliadin can trigger a protein in your gut lining called Zonulin. When Zonulin gets triggered, it causes your tight junctions to open and allows toxins and food particles to slip through into the blood stream. So, you ate a sandwich for lunch. No big deal. You have team cytokine coming to the rescue! That is until you have pasta for dinner. And then another sandwich for lunch tomorrow. This example shows how it’s possible to develop chronic, low level, persistent inflammation and leaky gut without even knowing it! Over time, this low-level inflammatory response can cause some not-so-obvious symptoms to occur like the ones listed below. Joint Pain – you wake up achy, you go to bed achy, you’re popping Advil like its candy- You might have a Leaky Gut! When an inflammatory process is prolonged it goes into overdrive and you get stuck in a viscous inflammatory cycle. One of the most common places to feel that is in your joints. You may even notice that your overall appearance is “puffy”. You’ve got Acne or Skin Problems – If your blood stream is overflowing with toxins, your liver becomes backed up and you will circulate dirty blood. Your body will often try to remove those toxins through the skin. This can present as acne, skin rashes, and even eczema or psoriasis. Thyroid Problems and Hormone Imbalance – Your endocrine system is highly dependent on the health of your gut. In my office we manage the thyroid and treat the gut- the root cause of most hypothyroidism. In respect to hormones, high levels of stress can increase your cortisol levels. Over time, high cortisol levels will decrease the amount of Secretory IgA (your immune system’s first line of defense in your gut) and weaken your immune system. If cortisol is spiked chronically, it can also cause an imbalance in the production of other hormones like estrogen, testosterone and progesterone. So, healing and sealing your gut lining can improve your thyroid/hormone function and keep your immune system check. (P.S. 70% of your immune system is in your gut lining!) Food Sensitivities – Think of food sensitivities as mini auto-immune responses to some of the foods you eat. Food sensitivities are unique to each individual and can occur in response to even the healthiest of foods! We aren’t talking “food allergies” (although that can happen when your immune system is wonky too) like peanuts and shellfish. Food sensitivities can happen in response to anything from bananas to almonds to kale- they can lead to fatigue, weight gain, increased inflammation, insomnia and a host of other symptoms. In order to find your specific food sensitivities and allergies, we can run a test for IgG, IgG4, IgA, and IgE antibodies against several foods. Anxiety and Depression – There’s a neurotransmitter called Serotonin that helps us deal with stressful situations, stabilizes our moods, brings us happiness and keeps us from wanting to strangle our coworkers (just kidding!). Most all your serotonin (90%) is produced in your gut lining. So, when you have a leaky gut, it disrupts and alters your serotonin levels and causes imbalances in associated neurotransmitters. This is what we refer to as the “gut-brain axis”. When you disturb the healthy balance that occurs in the gut, you also affect the brain and your neuro-chemistry. Often this presents as anxiety and depression. ### DO ANY OF THESE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS RELATE TO YOUR HEALTH? If so, here are five supplements that can help improve your immune function and heal and seal your leaky gut! L-Glutamine – Glutamine helps build the protective mucous layer in your GI lining. It is theoretically a non-essential amino acid but absolutely essential for healing leaky gut! We make glutamine in our own bodies but if we’ve have developed a leaky gut, we need to supplement in order to replenish what is needed for repair. Probiotics – Probiotics are like candy for your gut lining! Often a leaky gut is caused by dysbiosis (when the bad bacteria out-weigh the good ones). A good pharmaceutical, high-potency probiotic helps to re-populate the GI tract and create a healthy balance again. Immunoglobulins (IgG) – Serum-derived immunoglobulins such as SBI Protect by OrthoMolecular help to build up the immune system in someone who is struggling with a leaky gut. It’s like calling in the back up team when our own immune system can’t handle the fight. Immunoglobulins also help to bind microbe and toxins which will speed up the healing process. Mushroom Supplements – Mushroom blends help to down regulate the pro excitatory activity of cytokines and decrease inflammation. Simply put, they put out the fire. This helps to block the inflammatory response that can occur when the gut lining is compromised. DGL (deglycerized licorice) – This is not the same as licorice you buy on the candy shelf! DGL has been “deglycerized” and refined to produce the healthy components of licorice root. DGL helps by improving and thickening the mucous membrane in your gut lining and helping to seal up any leaks. DGL also has the added benefit of being anti-microbial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory which makes it a perfect supplement to help heal leaky gut! However, there is hope. [Functional medicine in Boulder CO](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/) offers a comprehensive and holistic approach to managing dysautonomia, focusing on identifying and addressing the underlying causes rather than merely treating the symptoms. In this blog post, we will explore the key principles of functional medicine and delve into practical strategies for managing dysautonomia through a functional medicine lens. ### UNDERSTANDING DYSAUTONOMIA IN BOULDER CO Dysautonomia is a disorder that disrupts the autonomic nervous system’s ability to regulate involuntary functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and temperature control. Common symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, brain fog, and gastrointestinal issues. While traditional medicine often relies on medication to manage symptoms, functional medicine takes a different approach. It recognizes that dysautonomia is often multifactorial, with underlying triggers such as inflammation, hormonal imbalances, gut dysbiosis, and environmental factors. ### PRINCIPLES OF FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE Functional medicine aims to identify and address the root causes of dysautonomia, employing a personalized and patient-centered approach. It recognizes the interconnectedness of various body systems and seeks to restore balance by addressing imbalances and dysfunctions within the body. Key principles of functional medicine include: - Individualized Care: Recognizing that each person is unique, functional medicine tailors treatment plans to address specific imbalances and needs. - Identifying Triggers: Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, functional medicine explores potential underlying triggers, such as food sensitivities, toxins, infections, or stressors. - Systemic Approach: Functional medicine views the body as an interconnected system, understanding that imbalances in one area can impact other bodily functions. ### MANAGING DYSAUTONOMIA WITH FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE Functional medicine offers a variety of strategies for managing dysautonomia - Nutrition: A nutrient-dense, whole foods-based diet is essential for supporting overall health. Eliminating inflammatory foods, such as processed sugars, artificial additives, dairy, eggs, gluten, and refined grains, can help reduce inflammation and support autonomic function. An individualized approach may involve identifying food sensitivities and addressing nutrient deficiencies through targeted supplementation, such as B vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. - Gut Health: The gut and autonomic nervous system are closely connected. Supporting gut health through probiotics, prebiotics, and healing the gut lining can help reduce inflammation and improve dysautonomia symptoms. - Stress Management: Chronic stress can exacerbate dysautonomia symptoms. Implementing stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, hypnotherapy, yoga, and adequate sleep can help regulate the autonomic nervous system. - Detoxification: Reducing exposure to environmental toxins and supporting the body’s natural detoxification pathways can aid in reducing the burden on the autonomic nervous system. - Hormonal Balance: Dysautonomia can be influenced by hormonal imbalances. Balancing hormones through targeted supplementation, stress reduction, and optimizing sleep can help restore autonomic function. ### CONCLUSION Managing dysautonomia requires a comprehensive approach that addresses the underlying imbalances contributing to the condition. Functional medicine offers a promising framework for individuals seeking to regain control over their autonomic nervous system and improve their quality of life. By adopting a personalized approach that incorporates nutrition, gut health, stress management, detoxification, and hormonal balance, individuals can work towards restoring balance and minimizing dysautonomia symptoms. It is important to work with a qualified healthcare practitioner experienced in functional medicine to develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. MdDS is a neurological condition where the brain fails to shut off motion signals after exposure to movement, such as a boat, plane, or long car ride or even a random event (spontaneous type) when the body and brain are compromised . People with MdDS experience constant rocking, swaying, or bobbing — often described as feeling like being stuck on a boat in rough seas, even when standing still on solid ground. This sensation rises and falls throughout the day, much like tides that never fully recede. That description isn’t metaphorical — it reflects what the brain is doing in real time. What the Brain Is Actually Doing in MdDS In a healthy nervous system, the brain continuously integrates information from: The eyes (visual input) The inner ear (balance and motion) The feet and joints (proprioception) In MdDS, this integration breaks down. Even though the eyes see a stable environment and the feet feel firm ground, the brain continues sending motion signals anyway. The brain refuses to reconnect visual cues with proprioceptive input — so motion never turns off. This is not anxiety. This is not imagined. This is neurological misfiring. Why Neurotransmitters Matter in MdDS Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that regulate alertness, balance, stress response, and sensory processing. In MdDS, these systems often become overstimulated and stuck. Certain excitatory neurotransmitters are meant to rise briefly and then clear. But in many MdDS patients, clearance is impaired. When these chemicals remain elevated, the brain stays in a heightened, overactive state — unable to recalibrate balance signals. This ongoing neurotransmitter overload can keep the brain locked into motion mode, even long after the original trigger is gone. The Hormone Connection in MdDS Neurotransmitters and hormones are deeply interconnected. When neurotransmitters are dysregulated, hormone balance is often affected as well. Many MdDS patients experience: Elevated cortisol Worsening symptoms during hormonal transitions (ovulation, week prior to cycle or week of cycle) Sleep disruption Fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest Increased sensitivity to stress Persistent headaches Sensitivity to barometric pressure This happens because stress hormones and neurotransmitters share metabolic pathways. When the nervous system is overwhelmed, hormone signaling often becomes unstable — further reinforcing MdDS symptoms. The Role of Genetics in MdDS Some people are genetically less efficient at clearing strong neurotransmitters and stress chemicals. This doesn’t mean something is “wrong” with them — it means their nervous system has less margin for overload. When neurotransmitters linger longer than they should, the brain remains overstimulated. Over time, this biochemical pressure can keep motion circuits firing when they should be quiet. MdDS often emerges when the brain crosses this threshold. Why I Understand MdDS Personally I don’t just help people with MdDS — I have lived it. I’ve experienced multiple episodes myself, including a prolonged episode lasting over a year. I understand the fear, isolation, and frustration that come with a condition few providers truly understand. That experience is why I focus on the root biological drivers of MdDS — not symptom suppression- even though that is also important! I have helped many patients with MdDS reach remission, and our goal is to help many more. It’s Never Too Late to Seek Help for MdDS MdDS is often dismissed or misunderstood, but it is a real neurological condition with identifiable drivers. The brain is adaptable, and meaningful improvement is possible — even if symptoms have lasted months or years. If you or someone you love is struggling with MdDS, we offer a free preliminary consultation to help determine whether our approach may be appropriate for you. You do not have to live feeling like you’re stuck on a boat forever. Relief is possible — and help exists. You are probably wondering why you are still rocking, bobbing, and swaying after recent travel by boat, car, plane, train, etc., and you want to know what you can do about it! First, let me say this. I understand your pain, frustration, and fear. The purpose of this blog post is to be your advocate and get you the help you need as soon as possible. Time is of the essence with this beast. I have had 5 different bouts of MdDS, the longest and worst being for a full year. Through my own experience and research, I’ve been able to help others with MdDS in my Functional Medicine practice. My primary goal is to help guide you toward remission as soon as possible. You may be wondering what you can do to be proactive? Unfortunately, many doctors are still perplexed about this condition and several are completely unaware of what it is, let alone how to treat it. That seems to be the biggest hurdle of all; just receiving a diagnosis! No one has all the answers to this strange condition (yet), myself included. However, I have learned and discovered a few things along my personal MdDS journey and while helping others on theirs. There are several theories out there about “why” people get MdDS, and I’ll be sharing more about that in a separate blog post. But first things first. If you have MdDS right now, we need to get you headed in the right direction to hopefully stop the rocking and bobbing. Several years ago (the site that posted this has now removed it), there was literature online that recommended treating cases of MdDS with Valium within the first 4 weeks. I’ve had three different doctors (2 separate occasions) diagnose me with MdDS and prescribe this for me. When prescribed early, I’ve gone into remission much faster! I think of MdDS as your brain being stuck in a loop and not being able to break out of the cycle. It’s working overtime and to try to re-right itself but it just can’t seem to realize that you are no longer on a boat, plane, etc.. The Valium may work by depressing the central nervous system, giving your brain a chance to relax a bit and realize that you are grounded and back on land. Think of it like rebooting your computer. Although in this case you’re not turning off the power per se, just turning it down for a little while so it has a chance to reset. To reiterate, this is just my theory. No one really has concrete, objective findings on this condition at this point and hopefully someday we will have more answers. So, what type of doctor should you see? My advice would be to schedule an appointment with a Neurologist asap. Please ask if they are familiar with/have had patients with MdDS prior to making the appointment so that you do not waste your time! Some ENT’s and other doctors are aware of this condition and the primary lines of treatment but if they aren’t, you may find yourself side-tracked with a host of things such as MRI’s, CT’s, vestibular rehabilitation and incorrect diagnoses. From my own experience and from several of my patients’ experiences, these things only delay the process. I was extremely fortunate to have an ENT diagnose me initially, followed by neurologist at Johns Hopkins. Both wrote the same prescription for recent (less than 6 months) onset of MdDS: 5 mg of Valium, three times a day for three weeks. At 12 weeks post-onset this dose gave me roughly 70% improvement, the remainder coming over the next year. At 1-week post-onset, (my last and 5 th time) it put me into full remission. Several of my patients have experienced benefit from this course of treatment as well. In addition to taking the Valium prescribed by my doctor, I also incorporated other modalities such as increasing proprioceptive input to the hands and feet, visual (neuro-ocular) exercises, supplements, blue-light blocking glasses, meditation , listening to binaural beats, acupuncture, chiropractic, reflexology and yoga. Throw everything at it that you can! The Functional Medicine aspect of this is crucial to your remission goals and especially your future health regarding MdDS. I believe there is a significant connection between MdDS and neural inflammation, the methylation process, stress, hormone balance and immune/autoimmune disturbances. These are all my areas of expertise. If you are suffering with MdDS, I’d like to invite you to schedule a Free 15-minute Preliminary Consult with me to discuss your needs. This can be scheduled from our website at [www.DrGingerWolfe.com](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/). Don’t wait, act now. I look forward to speaking with you. Ginger Wolfe, D.C. MdDS is a complex neurological condition characterized by persistent sensations of rocking, swaying, or bobbing — often after exposure to motion such as boats, cruises, flights, or long drives. In some cases, symptoms begin without a clear motion trigger, known as spontaneous MdDS. While MdDS can feel relentless and life-altering, clinical experience and emerging understanding of the nervous system suggest that meaningful improvement — and in many cases remission — is possible when the right factors are addressed. Why MdDS Persists — and Why It Often Improves With the Right Approach MdDS is not caused by structural brain damage. Instead, it is considered a functional neurological condition , meaning the brain is operating in an altered signaling pattern. The brain continuously integrates: - Visual input from the eyes - Balance input from the inner ear - Positional input from the feet and joints In MdDS, this integration becomes disrupted. Even when visual and physical cues signal stability, the brain continues to generate motion signals. This creates the constant sensation of being on a boat in rough seas — a feeling that rises and falls throughout the day but never fully shuts off. Importantly, because this is a functional pattern, not permanent damage, it is also a pattern that can change. Neuroplasticity: Why the Brain Has the Capacity to Reset The nervous system is adaptable. This adaptability, known as neuroplasticity , allows the brain to reorganize and establish new patterns when conditions support it. In clinical practice, we often see that when the nervous system is no longer overwhelmed, the brain becomes more capable of recalibrating motion and balance signals. This is why some individuals experience gradual improvement, while others report more pronounced shifts over time. Neuroplasticity does not promise outcomes — but it explains why MdDS does not have to be static. Neurotransmitters and Hormones in MdDS A key factor in MdDS that is frequently overlooked is neurotransmitter regulation. Neurotransmitters control alertness, balance processing, stress response, and sensory integration. In many individuals with MdDS, the nervous system appears to remain in a heightened or overstimulated state, making it difficult for motion signals to quiet. Hormones are deeply intertwined with this process. Stress hormones and sex hormones share pathways with neurotransmitters, which helps explain why many MdDS patients experience: - Symptom flares during stress - Worsening symptoms during perimenopause or menopause - Sleep disruption, fatigue, and nervous system sensitivity When neurotransmitters and hormones are better regulated, the brain often becomes more receptive to stabilization. Genetics and Nervous System Load Genetic factors can influence how efficiently neurotransmitters and stress chemicals are cleared from the body. Individuals with reduced clearance capacity may experience prolonged nervous system activation, increasing susceptibility to MdDS and slowing recovery. Genetics do not determine outcomes — but they can influence how much support the nervous system needs to regain balance. Spontaneous MdDS: When Symptoms Appear Without Travel or Motion Not all MdDS cases follow motion exposure. Spontaneous MdDS occurs when symptoms begin without a clear trigger and is often associated with: - Chronic stress or burnout - Hormonal shifts - Illness or immune activation - Sleep deprivation Drug or medication induced --- title: "MDDS - SUFFERING IN A HIDDEN WORLD" entity: "blog" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/blog/mdds-suffering-in-a-hidden-world" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/blog/mdds-suffering-in-a-hidden-world" lastmod: "2024-02-01T15:14:00.000Z" --- It’s taken me a long time to write about this nasty, rare condition and how it’s affected my life. I’ve kept my MdDS (Mal de Debarquement Syndrome or aka Disembarkment Syndrome aka Land Sickness) a secret from most people, primarily because they don’t know what it is, have no idea how to relate, what advice to give, and probably most frustrating is that from their eyes, I look completely normal. To top it off, I’m a doctor myself and shouldn’t I be able to figure out a way to stop it? For more information contact our team at [Wolfe Functional Medicine.](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/) ### MY STORY In 2014, I had my fourth relapse. I had spent just two nights sleeping on a docked catamaran in the Keys. Those two nights took me an entire year to recover and have left me somewhat traumatized ever since. For those of us who have, or are suffering with this condition, I know you can relate. We are often dismissed by doctors, have been through multiple rounds of tests that either produce no findings or exacerbate our condition, have trouble getting through just normal daily activities (let alone work), and are left with no information or answers on how to “fix” it. Making things even more complex is that even though most of us have been triggered by boats, that is not the case with everyone and even though most of us find relief while driving or riding in a car, that is also not the case with everyone. The symptoms vary from person to person along with every drug that is used to possibly “reset” the brain and bring us out of this continuous, torturous loop. ### SENSATIONS/SYMPTOMS To help better understand, I’ve listed several sensations/symptoms that patients and myself have suffered. This is what life can be like when someone is living with MdDS. - Continuous sense that you are still on a boat, rocking, swaying, bobbing, dizziness type feelings. - Imagine someone grabbed your shoulders and slowly shook you back and forth and side to side, nonstop. Sitting still and lying down can make the sensation even worse. - Imagine that your head is a balloon with a 6-foot string attached to your neck and its blowing in the wind, nonstop. - Walls are moving toward you and away from you, the floor is coming up then down. This is what it can feel like when you are trying to walk. - You know that feeling you get when you’re at the top of a roller coaster and you start to drop? Imagine that feeling, nonstop. - Depth perception and spatial orientation are way off. - Binocular vision is absent. Often vision can feel as if it is bouncing around or shimmering. - Watching TV is agonizing, if even possible. - Busy carpets are nauseating. - Fluorescent lights, especially in large department stores or grocery stores can put you at a level 10 and make you want to run for your life. - Flickering lights (even at a very low level not obvious to the normal eye) cause exacerbations in symptoms. - Computer screens and blue lights increase the sensations of rocking. - Feeling as if you live in a virtual reality world and only have tunnel vision. - Unbearable fatigue due to brain over stimulation. Your feet and eyes are telling your brain you are on land and still, your brain thinks otherwise. It’s constantly trying to re-right itself, but it can’t. - Tremors in hands. - Nystagmus on occasion, not from MdDS but from your brain working to try to recover. - Sensitivity to loud noises. - Loss of memory- both short and long term. - Neck pain and muscle tension. - An inability to look at lines, even lines of a book. - Small spaces, such as a shower, can easily ramp up your symptoms to the point that you are unable to function for the rest of the day. ### MDDS IN BOULDER CO This is reality to an MdDS patient. It has cost many people their jobs and their marriages. And just as easy as the condition started, it can spontaneously remiss (we all pray for that!) or it can slowly go away over time, or in worst cases, it doesn’t go away. We know that the more times that you’ve had the condition, the more time it takes to recover and the less likely you are to go into full remission. Remission in general is not thought to be as likely once you pass the six month mark. This is still a fairly “new” condition and to my knowledge became more recognized as a diagnosis around 2006. Several doctors are still unaware of its existence and therefore are unable to diagnose it. The main diagnosing factor doesn’t come from neurological testing, vestibular testing or advanced imaging of the brain, but rather the fact that you’ve recently been on a boat (flight or train) and driving or riding in a car provides temporary remission. In recent years, a new treatment was discovered at Mt. Sanai hospital and according to my interpretation of the study (link below), it involves resetting the VOR (vestibular ocular reflex). It doesn’t work for everyone but hey, it’s progress. As more and more people are being diagnosed, we’ve created a windstorm of pleas and cries for help and more research is underway. Doctors are starting to listen as several of us have begun to try to piece together this rare disorder. Other than the study and the work done at Mt. Sanai, all doctors have been able to do is prescribe VOR exercises and medications such as Valium, Klonopin, Paxil, Gabapentin, and sometimes Prednisone at immediate onset, with the hopes that we can be somewhat functional while on them, and hopefully “reset” our brains when coming off of them. I compare this to a defibrillator for the heart. Much like defibbing the heart so that it comes back in normal rhythm, these medications depress the CNS in hopes that when we taper off the medication, our brain can unloop itself and the wires all connect properly once again. MdDS is labeled as having no cure. According to stats, this condition rears its ugly self to mostly women between the ages of 30 -60. With that said, I believe there is some underlying hormonal imbalance, genetic predisposition, environmental and neurotoxin exposure, gastrointestinal dysbiosis and its effect on hormones and estrogens, autoimmune responses, histamine reactions, and possibly even the screen time we’ve all been subjected to. In my practice, I’m also seeing a growing number of women in this age group with vestibular type migraines which can present in a similar fashion. Is MdDS just another type of migraine variant? I’m sure people have suffered from this condition for years prior to having an official diagnosis but it seems to me that the number of people being affected by MdDS is far more exponential now than it was 50 years ago. ### WHAT IS IT EXACTLY THAT IS TIPPING THE SCALES? I’m still working on figuring that out. I’ve found that through a very thorough and comprehensive history and examination, as well as hormone testing and inflammatory marker testing, Functional Medicine can help! I know because it helped me (my 5th relapse resulted in my fastest remission-Stay tuned for that blog post!) and it has helped many of my MdDS patients. Different modalities work for different patients and so I use every avenue I can to help patients recover. This includes but is not limited to supplements, dietary modifications, proprioceptive input exercises, VOR exercises, CBD, upper cervical adjustments, acupressure, reflexology, blue light glasses and infrared therapy. Here in Boulder Colorado At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we also work with a local Neurologist who is well versed and experienced in treating MdDS patients. If your persistent rocking and swaying are recent, please try to not to panic! I know this is hard, as I’ve suffered with MdDS myself, and I know what a horrible existence it can be. Most initial cases will resolve on their own within a few weeks, but some cases may require the use of medication, supplements, vestibular/eye exercises or other interventions to try to reach remission. I use the term “initial” case because once your brain has discovered this path, it is possible that it can choose it again if it is re-triggered. That is why I will personally never step foot on a boat again. No ferries, no canoes, no stand-up paddle boards, no pontoon boats, no floating watercraft ever again, period. So why does this happen to some people? No one has the answers as of now, but after working with many patients with MdDS I have noticed too many similarities to be coincidental. Here are 4 similar traits I see amongst us: - Type A Personality and High Cortisol Levels- most MdDS patients are go-getters and tend to be perfectionists. In other words, they are often high functioning and can handle a lot of things on their plate. Because of this, they usually have higher levels of cortisol in their system and suffer HPA axis dysfunction due to stress. ([What is the HPA axis?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothalamic%E2%80%93pituitary%E2%80%93adrenal_axis)) - Propensity for Allergies and Auto-Immune Conditions – several patients who develop MdDS have suffered with chronic allergies, food sensitivities and chronic sinus problems. Many also have pre-existing autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s or Lupus. I see more spontaneous onset (not triggered by a boat, plane or train) in patients with Lupus. All of these things could be related to potential methylation defects (see #4 below). - COMT Neurotransmitter Genetic Variant/SNP – (single nucleotide polymorphisms- (homozygous +/+ or heterozygous +/-) ([What are SNPs?](https://isogg.org/wiki/Single-nucleotide_polymorphism#:~:text=A%20single%2Dnucleotide%20polymorphism%20(SNP,paired%20chromosomes%20in%20an%20individual.)) The most common genetic variant that I see in my MdDS patients is the COMTv158m polymorphism. The COMT gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called catechol-O-methyltransferase which is necessary to breakdown and excrete catechols such as epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine and estrogens. If you have a COMTv158M variant, you will have an excess of these excitatory neurotransmitters as well as excess estrogen in your system, due to potential slow COMT activity. This can lead to higher levels of cortisol and cause HPA axis dysfunction, another common trait in MdDS patients. Things like alcohol and caffeine slow our body’s COMT mechanism even more. Another interesting factor is that estrogen in balanced levels can be both neuro-protective and immuno-protective. However, excess estrogens, particularly 4-OH- E1 and 16-OH-E1 metabolites can be just the opposite and allow for less protection. This may be the reason MdDS is more prevalant in females. To summarize, If COMT activity is slow and not working effectively in our body, it will inhibit detox pathways and therefore lead to potential estrogen dominance, excess stress and anxiety, and decreased neural protection. - Methylation Gene SNPs -What is methylation? Methylation is a process in your body that is necessary for so many crucial things. It helps provide proper detoxification, keeps inflammation at bay, regulates cellular processes, increases energy, supports neural pathways and balances neurotransmitters, aids in immune function and much more. Some of the methylation variants that I see in MdDS patients include MTHFR, MTHFD1, PEMT, AND DAO. Each one of these SNPs in itself requires specific supplementation to optimize function. Often times, my MdDS patients have not just one of these SNPs but several. Being homozygous for any of these SNPs can cause more pronounced health problems. In closing, I believe MdDS is highly tied to a genetic predisposition and associated neural inflammation. As of now, we may not have the exact answers about how to effectively treat this condition, but what we CAN do is give care to the genetic SNPs with the specific nutrients/vitamins needed to offset the dysfunction. For example, magnesium is a great supplement to help with COMT function, however there are several others and guidance differs depending on each patient’s full gene picture. It is not a one-size-fits-all recommendation, so please do not self-treat! If you are suffering with MdDS and are interested in knowing if you have some of these genetic variants/SNP’s, we offer testing to determine this and would be honored to help you in your journey towards remission. While conventional medicine may struggle to provide definitive solutions, Functional Medicine offers a holistic approach that considers the interconnectedness of bodily systems and focuses on addressing underlying imbalances. In this article, we’ll explore how Functional Medicine in Boulder CO can play a crucial role in helping individuals with MdDS manage their symptoms and improve their overall well-being. ### UNDERSTANDING MDDS: MdDS is characterized by a lingering feeling of motion, such as rocking or swaying, despite being in a stationary environment. This syndrome challenges traditional medical paradigms, and the etiology remains elusive. Functional Medicine, however, embraces a systems-thinking approach that seeks to understand the root causes of symptoms rather than merely addressing surface-level manifestations. ### FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE PRINCIPLES IN BOULDER CO - Individualized Care: Functional Medicine recognizes that each person is unique, and MdDS can manifest differently from one individual to another. By understanding a patient’s specific health history, genetic makeup, and lifestyle, Functional Medicine practitioners create personalized treatment plans tailored to the individual. Here at Wolfe Functional Medicine, we understand the importance of testing our patients for genetic variations or mutations. The most common genetic variant that we see in our MdDS patients has to do with the COMT gene. The COMT gene provides instructions for making an enzyme which is essential for the proper metabolism and excretion of excitatory neurotransmitters such as epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Anyone with this specific genetic variation, will hold on to these neurotransmitters for far longer than normal, which can lead to elevated and prolonged levels of cortisol (stress hormone) and subsequent neural inflammation. - Addressing the Gut-Brain Connection: Emerging research suggests a strong connection between the gut and the brain, known as the gut-brain axis. Functional Medicine often focuses on optimizing gut health, as imbalances in the gut microbiome can influence neurological function. For MdDS patients, addressing any potential gut issues is a key aspect of their care here at Wolfe Functional Medicine. Through our comprehensive testing of gut function and immune blood markers, we are often able to discover an overgrowth of certain microbes that predispose some patients to irritation and inflammation of their central nervous system. - Nutritional Support: Nutrition plays a pivotal role in overall health, and Functional Medicine emphasizes the importance of a nutrient-dense diet. Certain nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties that may benefit individuals with MdDS. A Functional Medicine approach includes assessing and addressing these critical nutritional deficiencies. At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we also often see chronic deficiencies in neuro-protective nutrients, such as B1, B6, and B12 vitamins, as well as essential minerals for proper neurotransmitter function, such as Magnesium, Zinc and Iron. - Stress Reduction Techniques: Stress can exacerbate the symptoms of MdDS. Functional Medicine incorporates stress reduction techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and biofeedback to help patients manage their stress response and improve their overall resilience. We have recognized a common theme of Type A personality among our MdDS patients at Wolfe Functional Medicine. This usually means that it’s more difficult for these types of individuals to de-stress on a regular basis because they are often perfectionists. As a result, they have higher levels of cortisol running through their bodies on a daily basis than the average person, predisposing their nervous systems to “burning out.” - Detoxification Support: Functional Medicine acknowledges the impact of environmental toxins on health. For individuals with MdDS, especially considering its potential vestibular connection, supporting the body’s detoxification pathways may be explored to reduce the burden of environmental toxins. The genetic variation testing that we perform here at Wolfe Functional Medicine has also demonstrated to us that many MdDS patients struggle with detoxification due to genetic methylation issues. Methylation is a natural process in your body that enables it to properly detoxify, de-flame and support neurological and immune function. Some of the methylation variants that we see in MdDS patients include MTHFR, MTHFD1, PEMT, AND DAO. These variations can certainly be supported and enhanced in regards to their function, but they require specific testing and targeted supplementation that most conventional health providers are not aware of. - Hormonal Balance: Hormonal imbalances can influence neurological function. Functional Medicine practitioners assess hormonal health and work to restore balance, which may be particularly relevant for certain individuals with MdDS, as hormonal fluctuations can impact symptoms. Besides high cortisol levels, many of our patients at Wolfe Functional Medicine also have reproductive hormone abnormalities, especially with estrogen. Estrogen in appropriate amounts can actually be both neuro and immuno-protective. However, any excess levels of estrogens, particularly from the 4-OH- E1 and 16-OH-E1 metabolites, can have an opposite effect. We believe this why MdDS is typically more common in female patients. - Case Management: Functional Medicine takes a comprehensive approach to managing MdDS, recognizing that multiple factors may contribute to the syndrome. A patient’s journey with a Functional Medicine practitioner often involves thorough assessments, including in-depth consultations, laboratory testing, and collaborative discussions about lifestyle factors. Here at Wolfe Functional Medicine, we provide a promising avenue for individuals navigating the challenges of MdDS. By addressing the root causes of symptoms and considering the interconnectedness of various bodily systems, we aim to empower our patients to actively participate in their healing journey. While the understanding of MdDS is constantly evolving, we at Wolfe Functional Medicine will continue to offer our unique personalized and holistic perspective that has enhanced the quality of life for those affected by this enigmatic syndrome. ### CONCLUSION Don’t wait to take charge of your health and find relief from your complex symptoms by contacting us today! Prenatal vitamins, avoiding certain foods, and tracking ovulation tend to dominate the conversation. But the truth is: a healthy pregnancy begins well before conception, and it involves both partners. Preconception optimization is the process of supporting overall health before trying to conceive so the body has the best possible environment for fertilization, implantation, and pregnancy. While no one can guarantee outcomes, supporting foundational health can improve the conditions needed for healthy egg and sperm quality. As a functional health coach, my role is not to diagnose or treat medical conditions. Instead, I help individuals look at the lifestyle and foundational health factors that influence fertility and overall well-being. Fertility Begins Months Before Conception: Both eggs and sperm develop over a period of time before fertilization occurs. Sperm typically take about 70–90 days to fully develop, while the maturation process that supports egg quality occurs over a similar window. That means the lifestyle choices made three to four months before conception may influence reproductive health. Nutrition, stress levels, sleep quality, environmental exposures, and metabolic health can all affect the internal environment where eggs and sperm develop. This is why preparing the body ahead of time can be such an important step. Why Male Health Matters Just As Much: Roughly 40–50% of fertility challenges involve male factors, yet male preconception health is often overlooked. Sperm health is influenced by many aspects of lifestyle, including: - Nutrient status - Oxidative stress levels - Sleep quality - Alcohol and tobacco use - Environmental toxin exposure - Metabolic health - Chronic stress Healthy sperm development relies on adequate nutrients, balanced hormones, and a supportive environment for cellular development. Small lifestyle shifts over several months can support overall reproductive health. Egg Quality and Maternal Health: On the female side, the body is preparing not only an egg for fertilization but also the environment where pregnancy will occur. Before conception, the body is already laying the groundwork for: - Hormonal signaling - Nutrient stores - Blood sugar balance - Inflammation regulation - The uterine environment The goal of preconception preparation is to support whole-body health, which in turn supports reproductive health. Foundations of Preconception Optimization: While every individual is different, there are several foundational areas that tend to influence reproductive health for both partners. Nutrition: A nutrient-dense diet supports cellular health and provides the building blocks needed for egg and sperm development. Key nutrients often associated with reproductive health include: - Folate - Choline - Zinc - Selenium - Omega-3 fatty acids - Iron - Antioxidants Whole foods such as leafy greens, quality proteins, healthy fats, seafood, and colorful fruits and vegetables provide many of these nutrients naturally. Sleep and Circadian Rhythm: Sleep plays a critical role in hormone regulation, metabolic health, and cellular repair. Consistent sleep patterns help support the hormonal communication involved in reproductive health. Stress Regulation: Chronic stress can affect many systems in the body, including hormone signaling. Stress management practices such as movement, time outdoors, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation can support overall wellness. Environmental Awareness: Everyday exposures—from plastics and household chemicals to personal care products—can contribute to the body’s overall toxic burden. Reducing unnecessary exposures may help support the body’s natural detoxification processes. Metabolic Health: Blood sugar balance and metabolic health influence hormone signaling and inflammation levels. Balanced meals, regular movement, and consistent routines help support these systems. The Power of Preparing Together: One of the most important parts of preconception health is approaching it as a team. When both partners support their health together, it can: - Reduce pressure on one person - Improve long-term family health habits - Create a supportive environment for pregnancy - Strengthen the partnership going into parenthood Preconception preparation is not about perfection. It’s about creating the best possible foundation for the future. A Gentle Reminder: Everyone’s fertility journey is unique. Lifestyle and nutrition can support overall health, but they are not a substitute for medical care or fertility evaluation. Anyone with concerns about fertility or reproductive health should consult with a qualified healthcare professional. Functional Health Coaching can complement medical care by helping individuals build sustainable habits that support their overall well-being during this important stage of life. Healthy pregnancies begin long before the positive test. Supporting the health of both partners helps create the strongest possible starting point for the next generation. --- title: "PRIORITIZING BREAST HEALTH: HOW FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN BOULDER CO | Wolfe Functional Medicine" entity: "blog" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/blog/prioritizing-breast-health-how-functional-medicine-can-make-a-difference-in-boulder-co" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/blog/prioritizing-breast-health-how-functional-medicine-can-make-a-difference-in-boulder-co" lastmod: "2024-02-01T15:21:00.000Z" --- In light of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, here at [Wolfe Functional Medicine in Boulder](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/) we want to shed some light on what it takes to keep breasts healthy, especially via the most gentle and natural means possible. Breast health is a topic of paramount significance for women, as breast-related issues, particularly breast cancer, remain a significant health concern worldwide. While conventional medicine plays a crucial role in breast health, functional medicine offers a complementary approach that focuses on the root causes of breast-related conditions, going beyond mere symptom management. In this blog, we will explore the key aspects of breast health, the role of functional medicine, and how this holistic approach can help women take proactive steps to protect their breast health and overall well-being. ### UNDERSTANDING BREAST HEALTH IN BOULDER CO Breast health encompasses a range of conditions, from benign concerns like fibrocystic breast changes to more severe issues such as breast cancer. Maintaining healthy breasts involves both breast cancer prevention and early detection, but it also extends to general breast well-being. Factors that influence breast health include nutrition, genetics, lifestyle choices, hormonal balance, immune status, and exposure to environmental toxins. ### FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE: A HOLISTIC APPROACH Functional medicine is an approach that investigates the underlying causes of disease and dysfunction. Instead of focusing solely on treating symptoms, functional medicine seeks to identify and address the root issues that contribute to health problems. In the context of breast health, functional medicine considers the interconnectedness of various systems in the body, recognizing that imbalances in one area can impact breast health. - Hormonal Balance: Hormonal imbalances, particularly elevated levels of estrogen, are linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. The main reasons for elevated estrogen levels include a diet that is rich in exogenous (outside) hormones, exposure to environmental toxins or harmful halogens (bromide) and a lack of certain vitamins/minerals that help to regulate our hormones. Functional medicine takes a comprehensive approach to hormonal balance. By evaluating factors like diet, stress, gut health, and environmental exposures, practitioners can help women regulate their hormones naturally, reducing their risk of breast-related issues. - Nutritional Support: Nutrition plays a crucial role in breast health. First and foremost, chronic iodine deficiency has been strongly linked to the development of fibrocystic breast disease and/or increased risk of breast cancer. Iodine is a master hormone regulator of not just the thyroid hormone but also our sex hormones, especially estrogen. Inadequate iodine over an extended period of time can lead to estrogen dominance and other hormonal imbalances that may predispose one to breast issues. In addition, a diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and a variety of fruits and vegetables can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress not just in the breast tissue but also the entire body. Functional medicine emphasizes personalized nutrition plans tailored to individual needs, ensuring women receive the essential nutrients required to support breast health. - Detoxification: Functional medicine recognizes the importance of the body’s natural detoxification pathways in eliminating harmful toxins. Reducing the burden of toxins in the body is essential for breast health. Detoxification of harmful estrogens or estrogen-metabolites can be a very effective method to ensuring that these damaging hormone byproducts don’t recirculate and linger in the body. Strategies like liver support, adequate hydration, and targeted supplements can assist the body in processing and excreting toxins, lowering the risk of breast-related issues. - Gut Health: The gut is often referred to as the “second brain” because of its influence on overall health, including hormonal balance and immune function. Dysbiosis in the gut, characterized by an imbalance in the gut microbiome, can contribute to systemic inflammation and hormonal disruptions. Functional medicine aims to restore gut health through dietary changes, probiotics, and prebiotics, which can indirectly support breast health. - Viral Infection Detection/Treatment: Most of us unknowingly harbor chronic viral pathogens, such as Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and/or Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which can promote chronic inflammation in certain parts of the body. EBV and HPV are the two viruses that have been particularly associated with infection and damage of healthy breast tissue. In fact, the prevalence of high risk HPV is about six fold higher in breast cancer than in normal and benign breast tissue controls. Through comprehensive pathogen testing, functional medicine strives to uncover most hidden viral infections that could potentially reactivate and increase one’s risk of developing breast cancer. Once detected, a natural but potent anti-viral regimen is initiated in an effort to reduce the overall viral load and push the pathogen(s) back into a dormant or less active state. ### PREVENTIVE MEASURES Functional medicine places significant emphasis on prevention. While it’s crucial for women to engage in breast cancer screenings and mammograms as recommended by conventional medicine, functional medicine adds an extra layer of preventive care. It empowers women with the knowledge and tools needed to make lifestyle choices that actively reduce their risk of breast-related conditions. ### CONCLUSION Breast health is a critical aspect of women’s well-being, and functional medicine offers a holistic approach that complements conventional medical practices. By addressing hormonal balance, nutrition, detoxification, gut health, and other factors, functional medicine helps women take proactive steps in preserving their breast health and overall quality of life. MOTION TRIGGERED MDDS | Wolfe Functional Medicine" entity: "blog" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/blog/spontaneous-vs-motion-triggered-mdds" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/blog/spontaneous-vs-motion-triggered-mdds" lastmod: "2024-02-01T15:17:00.000Z" --- I often get asked by patients how spontaneous cases of MdDS (Mal de Debarquement Syndrome) compare to motion-triggered cases. If you’ve acquired this condition either by some sort of passive motion or for no apparent reason whatsoever, you probably have a lot of questions and rightfully so. Over the past few years of working with both spontaneous and motion-triggered patients, I’ve seen a pattern and at the very least I hope to provide some insight to people out there who are living with this condition. Here’s what I can tell you as a result of comparing several test findings (Comprehensive Bloodwork, Organic Acids Testing, Genetic SNP Reports, Hormone Metabolites) amongst both motion-triggered patients and spontaneous patients. ### SPONTANEOUS VS MOTION TRIGGERED FINDINGS Neurotransmitters- It appears as though there is a similar culprit. Both sets of patients have an underlying complexity with the breakdown and metabolism of catecholamines like epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine. Across the board, I see a slow metabolism of these neurotransmitters. Imagine if you were functioning in a low level “fight or flight” mode all the time and you didn’t even know it because it’s all you’ve ever known! It’s kind of like a Microsoft computer with 50 windows open. It’s bound to stop working correctly! This is also taxes the HPA axis. Hence the reason most MdDS patients, spontaneous or not, usually have very high diurnal cortisol levels (also note that high levels of cortisol quench the production of Secretory IgA- an important antibody that helps support the immune system- more on that below). Methylation – An under-functioning methylation system is also evident in both cases. What does this mean? Well, a properly functioning immune system is highly dependent upon an optimally functioning methylation process, otherwise inflammation, neurological and immune dysfunction ensue. In spontaneous cases, it is not unlikely to discover other auto-immune conditions such as Hashimoto’s, Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, joint pain and multiple chemical and/or food sensitivities. To clarify, many motion-triggered patients also have a degree of immune dysfunction, but the ill-functioning immune system does not appear to be the primary trigger, it’s the motion that tips the scales for these patients. For spontaneous patients, it seems that the short-circuit in the immune system, and/or the associated neurological inflammation, could be the actual trigger. There are many different scenarios for how spontaneous MdDS begins in patients, but the bottom line is that these patients have extremely sensitive immune systems and neurological systems. Improvement and Remission – Improvement or remission for either Spontaneous or Motion-triggered cases seems to differ depending upon the amount of time that they have had MdDS, the age of the patient, hormone imbalance and the degree of immune dysfunction. Within the cases that I have followed and supported, I have witnessed a faster remission in patients that are motion triggered and are prescribed a therapeutic dose (not a prophylactic dose) of benzodiazepines (per a written prescription) within 6 months of onset. In this case, I believe the sooner the better. The benzo itself may not always work to stop it completely, but if taken early on, the odds seem more favorable. If the MdDS does not stop with the therapeutic dose, it usually takes patients to a more tolerable level and from there we can work on balancing the hormones and neurotransmitters and implementing specific exercises and modalities. It is my opinion that spontaneous cases, and chronic motion triggered cases fare better with the use of SSRIs or SNRIs. The one that I have seen have the greatest effect is Zoloft. However, these patients usually need additional help balancing hormones (or Hormone Replacement Therapy) and neurotransmitters and will also need to implement ocular and proprioceptive input exercises, as well as practice relaxation techniques and decrease any potential triggers. ### FINAL THOUGHTS Please note that when working with patients with MdDS, I don’t claim to offer a cure or promise remission. (That being said, our practice has had several patients find remission and we are very excited about that!) I do, however, work from a place of determining the “why” behind this condition, so that we can put together the pieces of “how” we can potentially reach remission. As a functional medicine practitioner, I approach this condition from a foundational perspective and from several directions. In a sense, I get to be a detective and I go looking for anything that can affect your neurological system. I also work as an advocate and a liaison between you and other providers to help support you in this process. If you are reading this and you didn’t already know, I have also suffered with MdDS. During my last episode, I vowed that I would work to serve and help others if I reached remission. So here I am. I will continue to share my findings and my thoughts on this condition in order to provide any helpful information to those suffering with MdDS or MdDS-like symptoms (vestibular migraines, cervicogenic headaches, etc.). My heart is with you and I would be honored to take care of you. In fact, according to recent reports, [about 75 percent of Americans](https://www.therecoveryvillage.com/mental-health/stress/stress-statistics/#:~:text=The%20Global%20Organization%20for%20Stress,people%20feel%20stress%20at%20work) experience moderate to high-stress levels. On the other hand, chronic fatigue syndrome affects an estimated [836,000 to 2.5 million](https://www.cdc.gov/me-cfs/index.html), with people reporting persistent exhaustion and low-quality life. And while conventional treatments offer temporary relief, they may fail to address the root causes of stress and chronic fatigue. Understanding their underlying causes and implementing functional medicine strategies will help you alleviate its burdens, rebalance the body, and restore vitality. ### WHAT’S CHRONIC FATIGUE? Chronic fatigue, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), is a condition characterized by [persistent and draining fatigue](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/chronic-fatigue-syndrome) that doesn’t improve with rest. It can last six months or more and often affects one’s ability to carry out everyday tasks. Common symptoms include muscle pains, headaches, impaired concentration, as well as unrefreshing sleep. Although the main cause of chronic fatigue remains unclear, it’s believed to involve a combination of several factors. ### MAIN CAUSES OF CHRONIC FATIGUE Here are the leading causes of chronic fatigue: - Immune Dysfunction: Many patients suffering from chronic fatigue have [NK cells](https://www.immunology.org/public-information/bitesized-immunology/cells/natural-killer-cells) with a lower functional ability to fight infections. Such abnormalities in the immune system play a significant role in the development of CFS. Patients may also have [low-grade chronic inflammation](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fneur.2019.00533/full) or an overactive immune response. - Viral Infections: An estimated [50-70% of patients](https://www.moleculeralabs.com/chronic-fatigue-immune-dysfunction-syndrome/#:~:text=Not%20surprisingly%2C%20CFS%20is%20often,like%20illness%202%20or%20infection.) with chronic fatigue syndrome say their symptoms started after a viral illness or infection. These infections may include Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) or [Human Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6)](https://emedicine.medscape.com/article/219019-overview), which may intrigue the immune response leading to post-viral fatigue. - Psychological Stressors: Prolonged exposure to high levels of stress can lead to chronic fatigue. Psychological stressors may include work pressure, traumatic experiences, or relationship difficulties that disrupt the body’s balance and contribute to fatigue. - Hormonal Imbalances: Hormonal imbalance involving [hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis](https://www.verywellhealth.com/hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-hpa-axis-5222557#:~:text=The%20hypothalamic%2Dpituitary%2Dadrenal%20(HPA)%20axis%20involves%20the,adrenal%20glands%20to%20release%20cortisol.) alterations also plays a significant role in human stress-related disorders like chronic fatigue syndrome and post-traumatic stress. ### WHY CONVENTIONAL TREATMENTS ARE INCOMPLETE AND LESS EFFECTIVE Conventional treatments for stress and chronic fatigue focus on managing the symptoms rather than addressing root causes. This approach typically involves prescribing medication to relieve pain, improve sleep, and boost energy levels. In fact, they offer temporary relief without addressing the complex interplay of factors contributing to these conditions. ### WHY FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE IS MORE EFFECTIVE IN TREATING TREAT STRESS AND CHRONIC FATIGUE Functional medicine is [a holistic approach to healthcare](https://www.ifm.org/functional-medicine/what-is-functional-medicine/), focusing on addressing the underlying causes of disease and promoting overall well-being. It offers a comprehensive and personalized approach to diagnosing stress and chronic fatigue. Here’s why functional medicine is considered more effective in treating these conditions. - Holistic Approach: Functional medicine views the body as an interconnected system considering the physical, mental, emotional, and environmental factors as key health influencers. It recognizes the possibility of stress and chronic fatigue resulting from a combination of any of these factors. Understanding and addressing these factors helps the body restore balance and vitality. - Functional Testing: Functional medicine [uses specialized tests](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/tests/) to understand different body functions. These tests can assess immune system function, hormone levels, gut health, and nutrient deficiencies. Understanding these aspects also helps in identifying and addressing specific imbalances causing chronic fatigue. - Personalized Treatment: Unlike most conventional treatments, functional medicine understands there’s no one-size-fits-all in treating stress and chronic fatigue. Each case is unique. Through in-depth lab tests and patient histories, functional medicine practitioners identify and diagnose specific imbalances and dysfunctions based on the root cause. - Lifestyle and Nutrition: Functional treatment recognizes lifestyle choices and nutrition as a naturopathic medicine for optimizing health. Patients can address energy deficiencies better and hasten recovery through healthy lifestyle habits like tailored exercise regimens as well as nutritional dietary plans. - Collaborative Partnership: Functional medicine providers also work intimately with their patients to understand their unique conditions and address them accordingly. They listen attentively and empower patients to actively participate in their recovery journey. This close partnership fosters trust, engagement, as well as compliance for better treatment outcomes. Don’t let constant exhaustion hold you back. A defining feature of PCOS is androgen dominance. These hormones,[ which play an integral role](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/are-your-hormones-making-you-crazy/) in reproductive health, emotional balance, mental acuity, and physical development like muscle growth and bone strength, are unusually high in individuals with this disorder. Your body makes androgens in several places including fat cells, the ovaries, as well as the adrenal glands. [Hyperandrogenism](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/24639-hyperandrogenism#:~:text=Hyperandrogenism%20happens%20when%20you%20have,Appointments%20216.444.6568), the medical term for elevated androgen levels, can manifest in two distinct ways. In fact, both of these can lead to a PCOS diagnosis. Clinical hyperandrogenism is evidenced by visible signs hinting at excessive androgen production. On the other hand, lab tests that show a high level of androgen hormones in the blood can help determine biochemical hyperandrogenism. ### SPOTTING THE SIGNS OF PCOS AND ANDROGEN DOMINANCE Hyperandrogenism or androgen dominance[ can result in a range of symptoms](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/24639-hyperandrogenism#symptoms-and-causes) that can differ greatly among individuals. These can include hirsutism or abnormal hair growth typically seen in males, such as facial hair or hair on the chest and back. Acne, particularly when severe and combined with other symptoms, may also point to high androgen levels. Another potential sign of hyperandrogenism is hair loss that follows a pattern typically seen in males—termed “male pattern balding”. This involves hair loss around the hairline or the crown of the head.[ Virilization](https://www.healthline.com/health/virilization), or the development of traits typically associated with males, is another possible symptom of hyperandrogenism. ### DEBUNKING PCOS: DO OVARIAN CYSTS DEFINE THE CONDITION? Despite the name ‘Polycystic Ovary Syndrome,’ having cysts on your ovaries is not always a part of the equation. This is why we suggest ‘Androgen Dominance’ as a more fitting description for this condition as it aptly reflects the hormonal imbalance at the heart of the syndrome. ### EMBRACING NATURAL TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR PCOS At [Wolfe Functional Medicine](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/functionalmedicine/), here in Boulder, CO, we believe in a holistic approach to managing PCOS. Our strategy includes comprehensive testing of blood, urine, saliva and stool, and based on the results of those labs, we create individualized health optimization plans for our patients that include herbal/nutritional supplementation and modifications to diet and lifestyle. We dig deeper than most conventional practitioners via extensive and intracellular testing for hormonal imbalances and nutritional deficiencies that are often at the root of the typical PCOS presentation. Many women with PCOS are not aware that for many years they have been chronically low in foundational nutrients, such as Iodine, Thiamine, and Magnesium, which are critical for proper hormone production and regulation. These nutritional deficits are highly contributory to the various symptoms and imbalances of PCOS patients. In addition, unlike most conventional providers, here at [Wolfe Functional Medicine](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/functionalmedicine/), we also do not negate the strong influence that latent pathogens, such as viruses and bacteria, have on our hormonal balance. In fact, women’s hormonal health is extremely dependent on the health of their immune system because the two systems are intimately linked. In other words, if our immune system is constantly dysfunctional and/or drained by chronic pathogens, then our hormonal balance will be challenged as well. If you think you might be experiencing PCOS symptoms, we at Wolfe Functional Medicine are here for you. We offer a free, no-obligation 10-minute consultation to discuss how we might be able to aid you. You don’t need to feel stuck with these symptoms—there are ways to manage them. ### ACT NOW: YOUR HEALTH CAN’T WAIT PCOS and androgen dominance are often overlooked or insufficiently treated in conventional medical practices, leaving many women unaware of their condition and the potential for managing it. While cancer has traditionally been associated with aging, the rising incidence in younger individuals has prompted a closer examination of lifestyle factors and environmental influences. This blog from our [Boulder CO Functional Medicine Clinic](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/) delves into the factors contributing to the surge in cancer rates among the youth and explores how Functional Medicine can offer a holistic and personalized approach to mitigate these risks. ### THE ALARMING RISE IN CANCER AMONG YOUNG ADULTS Historically, cancer has been more prevalent in older populations. However, recent studies have shown a surprising uptick in cancer diagnoses among individuals under 50 years of age, even in their 20s and 30s. Factors contributing to this increase include environmental exposures, chronic/hidden infections, sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and heightened stress levels. ### UNDERSTANDING THE FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE APPROACH Functional Medicine practitioners, with their emphasis on identifying and addressing the root causes of health issues, are uniquely positioned to tackle the complex web of factors contributing to the rise in cancer rates among young people. - Personalized Assessment: At Wolfe Functional Medicine, we conduct thorough assessments, taking into account an individual’s medical history, lifestyle choices, and genetic predispositions. We particularly like to take a closer look at your genetic variations/mutations to ensure that we provide you with the most individualized health optimization plan. This personalized approach allows for a more targeted and effective prevention strategy. - Nutritional Optimization: The role of nutrition in cancer prevention cannot be overstated. Here at Wolfe Functional Medicine we emphasize the importance of a nutrient-dense diet tailored to an individual’s unique needs, promoting optimal cellular function and immune support. We also order comprehensive nutrient profiles on each of our patients to uncover any deficiencies in the most fundamental nutrients that are essential to a properly functioning immune system. - Detoxification Support: Young adults today are exposed to a myriad of environmental toxins that can contribute to cancer risk. Wolfe Functional Medicine employs strategies to support the body’s natural detoxification processes, aiding in the elimination of harmful substances. Some of the most common toxins we encounter in our testing include gasoline additives, styrene products (plastics), mercury, lead and other heavy metals. These substances often overwhelm the liver and other detoxification systems, leading to a compromised immune system and predisposition to DNA damage or mutations. - Stress Reduction Techniques: Chronic stress has been linked to cancer development. We at Wolfe Functional Medicine strive to incorporate stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation practices into all of our patients’ treatment plants. We believe it’s crucial to first recognize all of the sources of stress in our patients’ lifestyles that they may not even be aware of and to develop daily habits or sustainable strategies to mitigate the impact of stress on overall health. - Balancing Hormones: Hormonal imbalances are increasingly recognized as contributors to cancer risk. There is especially a high prevalence of estrogen dominance among today’s population, both in men and women, which has been linked to higher cancer risk. Wolfe Functional Medicine specializes in addressing hormonal health through lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, and targeted interventions to reduce the risk of hormone-related cancers. - Inflammation Mitigation: Chronic inflammation is a common denominator in many cancers. At Wolfe Functional Medicine we can often trace our patients’ high inflammatory markers to certain nutrient deficiencies, toxin exposures and chronic, undiagnosed infections. Viral infections have been particularly linked with certain types of cancers, such as Lymphomas, breast cancer, prostate cancer and many others. We aim to identify and address sources of inflammation through dietary adjustments, anti-inflammatory/anti-viral supplements, and specific lifestyle modifications. - Early Detection: Regular screenings and diagnostic tests play a crucial role in identifying abnormalities or cancerous cells before symptoms manifest, providing a critical window of opportunity for timely intervention. Last year, Wolfe Functional Medicine began offering a revolutionary early cancer detection test known as Galleri. The Galleri test, developed by GRAIL, Inc., is a liquid biopsy-based screening test that is designed to detect more than 50 types of cancers, including those with historically lower screening options. The test focuses on identifying cancer-related signals in the blood, providing a more comprehensive approach to early cancer detection. Wolfe Functional Medicine is proud to offer this ground-breaking technology to our at-risk patients through just a single, simple blood draw. ### CONCLUSION As the incidence of cancer among young people continues to rise, Functional Medicine emerges as a promising approach to address the multifaceted nature of this health challenge. By delving into personalized assessments, lifestyle modifications, and holistic interventions, we at Wolfe Functional Medicine hope to offer a beacon of hope in the fight against cancer for the younger generation. We invite you to get in touch with us to find out how we can assist you in reducing your cancer risk and taking back control of your health. But from a functional, root-cause perspective, the gastrointestinal (GI) system plays a much bigger role. It influences nutrient absorption, immune signaling, hormone balance, inflammation, and even how we feel mentally and emotionally. Rather than focusing only on symptom relief, a functional approach to GI health asks a deeper question: what may be contributing to these imbalances in the first place? The Gut as a Foundation System The GI tract is responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste, but it’s also home to a large portion of the immune system and a diverse community of microorganisms known as the gut microbiome. When the gut environment is supported, the body is often better able to maintain balance. When it’s under stress, signals may show up in ways that don’t always seem digestive at first, such as: - Fatigue or low energy - Skin concerns - Mood changes or brain fog - Food sensitivities - Frequent immune challenges From a root-cause lens, these signals aren’t random, they’re information. Looking Beyond Symptoms Conventional approaches often focus on managing GI symptoms once they become disruptive. While symptom support can be important, functional health views symptoms as feedback, not failures. Instead of asking only, “How do I get rid of this?” a root-cause approach asks: - What may be irritating or stressing the gut? - Is digestion being adequately supported? - Is the gut environment balanced? - Are there hidden factors contributing beneath the surface? This shift allows for a more comprehensive and personalized view of GI wellness. Hidden Contributors That May Go Unnoticed One important aspect of a functional GI approach is recognizing that not all gut stressors are obvious. Some contributors may be present without causing classic or severe digestive symptoms. These can include: - Bacterial imbalances or infections within the gut microbiome - Parasitic exposure, which can occur through travel, food, water, or environmental contact - Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a common bacterium that can live in the stomach and often goes undetected - Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) What’s important to understand is that these factors don’t always announce themselves loudly. Some individuals may experience subtle or non-digestive signs, while others may feel “mostly fine” for years. From a functional perspective, awareness matters; not to create fear, but to acknowledge that unresolved gut stressors can quietly influence overall health. A Root-Cause, Supportive Approach Functional health coaching focuses on: - Educating clients about possible underlying contributors - Identifying patterns in symptoms, history, and lifestyle Supporting foundational gut health habits --- title: "Will MdDS Ever Go Away?" entity: "blog" canonical_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/blog/will-mdds-ever-go-away" markdown_url: "https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/llms/blog/will-mdds-ever-go-away" lastmod: "2026-03-11T02:50:00.000Z" --- If you’re living with Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS), you’ve likely asked the question: Will this ever go away? Will the rocking stop? Will the swaying calm down? Will my brain ever feel still again? MdDS is a persistent neurological condition characterized by ongoing sensations of rocking, bobbing, or swaying — often after cruise travel, flights, or prolonged motion exposure. Unlike traditional vertigo, MdDS typically improves when in motion and worsens when still, making it uniquely disorienting and emotionally exhausting. And because routine imaging is usually normal, many patients feel dismissed or misunderstood. Let’s talk about what’s actually happening. What Is Happening in the Brain with MdDS? MdDS is not brain damage. It is not degeneration. It is not a structural disease. MdDS is considered a maladaptive neuroplastic response. During travel or passive motion exposure, the brain adapts to movement. That adaptation is normal. In most people, the brain recalibrates once motion stops. In MdDS, the brain continues firing in that “motion” pattern — even when you are standing still. It’s as if the nervous system remains entrained to a rhythm that no longer exists. From a functional medicine perspective, we often see contributing factors that increase neurological load, including: - Limbic system hyperactivation - Autonomic nervous system dysregulation - Neurotransmitter imbalance - Hormonal shifts (especially perimenopause and menopause, ovulation or right before/during your period) - Chronic stress chemistry - Systemic inflammation - Sleep disruption When the brain is overstimulated, inflamed, or hormonally unstable, it struggles to accurately process sensory information such as time, space, and solid ground. Can the Brain Recalibrate in MdDS? Here is where hope becomes grounded in physiology. The brain is plastic. Neuroplasticity allows the brain to adapt — and it also allows the brain to re-adapt. But recalibration requires the right internal environment. When overall neurological load is reduced, the brain is better able to: - Assimilate sensory input - Integrate vestibular information - Process spatial orientation accurately - Exit maladaptive oscillatory loops Clinically, I have witnessed that when inflammation decreases, stress chemistry stabilizes, hormones balance, sleep improves, and neurotransmitter signaling becomes more regulated, patients often describe gradual or even overnight shifts: - The rocking becomes softer. - The waves feel less constant. - The intensity decreases. - Resilience improves. These shifts may begin subtly or sometimes even overnight. The bottom line is that recalibration does not happen in chaos. It happens in a calmer neurological terrain and this is the basis of my treatment approach. A Root-Cause Approach to Mal de Débarquement Syndrome: Rather than focusing solely on suppressing symptoms, my approach to MdDS centers on reducing neurological overload and improving the brain’s capacity to process information accurately. That includes evaluating: - Hormone balance (estrogen, progesterone, cortisol patterns) - Gut health and inflammatory markers - Nutrient sufficiency for neurotransmitter production - Autonomic nervous system tone - Stress load and limbic activation - Sleep architecture - Neurotransmitter regulation In some cases, collaborative care with other providers may be appropriate to further reduce excessive neural firing so the brain can more easily integrate reality correctly. When the overall signaling intensity is lowered, the brain often becomes more capable of recalibrating. It is all about improving the physiological terrain that supports neurological recovery. MdDS and Hormones: An Overlooked Connection Many women develop MdDS during perimenopause or menopause. Hormonal fluctuations — particularly in estrogen — directly influence neurotransmitter signaling, vestibular processing, immune modulation, and brain excitability. When hormone shifts combine with stress and motion exposure, the nervous system may become more vulnerable to maladaptive entrainment. Stabilizing hormonal patterns can significantly reduce neurological volatility and improve overall adaptability. This connection is frequently overlooked in conventional discussions of MdDS. You Are Not Broken Living with chronic rocking vertigo can make you feel fragile or defective. You are neither. Your brain adapted to motion. It simply hasn’t recalibrated yet. The same neuroplasticity that allowed adaptation also allows re-adaptation. While no ethical provider can promise remission, I can say this: I have witnessed meaningful improvement when the nervous system is intentionally supported, neurological load is reduced, and the brain is given the conditions it needs to recalibrate. Hope is not false reassurance. Hope is possibility rooted in physiology. But as exciting as this time of year is for many of us, it’s typically not our healthiest. The winter season often brings extra challenges to our immune system, which predispose us to catch the various viral strains that circulate. Many hospitals are in fact currently overwhelmed by the ‘tripledemic’ of viral infections (Influenza, RSV, and Covid-19) sweeping across the country. This is why our [functional medicine team in Boulder CO](https://www.drgingerwolfe.com/) feel it’s incredibly important to know what can put us at a higher risk of acute infections, and also which wellness tips we can implement now and onward in order to keep ourselves healthy throughout the entire holiday and winter season. ### CATCHING INFECTIONS IN BOULDER CO One of the main reasons for the increase in our susceptibility to catching various infections during this season is actually the dryer air in both our outdoor and indoor environments. Extended exposure to dry air leads to dehydration of our mucosal membranes, which act as our first line of defense against pathogens like viruses. Once the mucus in our eyes, nostrils, and mouth begins to dry out, our immune system is less adept at quickly trapping unfriendly microbes and preventing them from penetrating and invading our bodies deeper. Another immune stressor we are more affected by during the winter and holiday season is inadequate movement. Colder weather often makes for warmer couches because we feel less guilty about exercising our couch potato rights when outdoor exercising is so uninviting. Studies point to a decrease in the regular physical activity being associated with a decrease in the circulation of our immune cells, further contributing to seasonal pathogens taking advantage of us. Lastly, all the extra effort and stress associated with holiday shopping sprees, expenses, cleaning, cooking, and hosting can often lead us to not only lose sleep over the long ‘to-do lists,’ but also experience what is often referred to as ‘mom burnout.’ This results in the repeated release of cortisol and other stress hormones, which further contributes to the suppression of our immunity via inhibition of lymphocyte production—the exact white blood cell required for fighting viruses. ### IMMUNE SYSTEM HEROS With all that in mind, there are still definite steps we can take during this time to prevent additional hits to our immunity and to promote a more robust response against viruses. Besides doing our best to hydrate our bodies, de-stress daily, move more and obtain sufficient sleep, there are also targeted nutrients we can supplement with to give our immune system the best fighting chance against these unfriendly onslaughts. Vitamin C, Zinc, and Vitamin D are true and tried immune-supportive nutrients that many of us already know to reach for the minute we feel like we’re coming down with something. Vitamin C is definitely a smart addition during the winter season because it enhances the natural activity of our antibodies, white blood cells, and natural killer cells—all the necessary agents that we need to keep in top-notch form when fighting off pathogens. Zinc is another immune hero we should have easily on hand due to its ability to prevent excessive immune activation and the out-of-control inflammation that can sometimes result from potent infections. Thirdly, Vitamin D has attained quite a bit of recognition for its immune benefits over the years, and rightfully so, as it has been shown in studies to lower the risk of acute respiratory infections, particularly in very deficient individuals. ### OPTIMAL IMMUNE FUNCTION However, as helpful as the above supplements may be, there are actually three other less well-known nutrients that are even more essential for optimal immune function. One of those nutrients is actually Magnesium. Known mostly for its relaxing and/or laxative effects, magnesium is not usually thought of as an immune-supportive nutrient, but it definitely should be. As an essential mineral, magnesium is required for hundreds of functions in the body, such as activating numerous enzymes involved in the absorption and metabolism of various nutrients associated with a healthy immune response. In fact, chronic magnesium deficiency can lead to the shutdown of Vitamin D synthesis and metabolism pathway and is one of the main but under-reported causes behind Vitamin D deficiency. Another essential nutrient similar to Magnesium that all cells and tissues of the body need to function properly is Thiamine or more commonly known as the B1 vitamin. In fact, Magnesium and B1 often work in conjunction as co-factor companions, activating the various enzymes needed to support high-energy systems and chemical pathways in the body, such as those involved with the immune response. Sometimes referred to as an “anti-stress” vitamin, Thiamine nourishes our nervous system, which improves the body’s ability to withstand stressful conditions and in turn, protects our immunity. Thiamine deficiency has also been shown to increase inflammation and lead to aberrant antibody responses. As antibodies and T-cells are required to eliminate viruses, adequate B1 levels are likely to aid in proper immune responses during severe viral infections. Last but not least, iodine is another underdog of immune-supportive minerals because it’s one of the best natural antiseptics known to man! In fact, no pathogen can thrive in the body with enough iodine because it repels numerous viruses, parasites, fungi, yeast, and bacteria. For this reason, your immune system is completely dependent on enough iodine to function properly and iodine deficiency can lead to multiple immune system imbalances, such as frequent colds/flu, chronic UTIs, sinus infections, acne, bronchitis, pneumonia, and more. Hopefully, the above information will give you something new to ponder and most of all, remind you to spend some time taking care of yourself and your immunity this winter season.
